Hell, they were almost the same band. Box and Blackmore were virtually clones, as were Byron and Gillan. Both bands had the same hard-driving, keyboard-supported style. (I was nuts for keyboard rock then. Still am.) I think Heep were a tad tighter.

But Purple had a monster live album and Heep didn't.
