BART is solely a heavy rail commuter system serving four counties. The public transit system in San Francisco is called MUNI and it runs buses, subways, and the cable cars.

probably the most diverse transit fleet out there. Some buses ("trolley coaches") are powered by overhead electric wires, too.

I love riding them when the tourist season slacks off. MUNI also has many articulated double-length buses.

And since you mentioned the trolley buses, we had them in Boston too (where they're called "trackless trolleys") and those trolleys have air brakes that are known for "FARTing" when the vehicles are stopped suddenly. There. I've brought the cc full circle.
