The thread of good covers.
Because the shitty covers thread makes the baby jesus cry.

Here's one to start you off: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEtJXjvj-Tk&feature=related

BTW, this band is awesome live. Go see them.

1. Sorry, Faith No More covering "Easy" is the best cover ever.
For a number of reasons.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CH7J3G7Qtt0

They also did a great cover (live only) of the Nestle "creamy white, dreamy white" commercial.

2. And here's another.

I could tell you which link is what band doing what song, but that sounds like work. Think of this as sort of a musical grab bag. Only louder and kinda obnoxious, because that's how my tastes tend to run.

4. "The Man Who Sold the World" -Nirvana covers Bowie. Excellent cover.
Dream Theater also did a kickass cover of 'Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding' by Elton John. Incidentally, that is Elton John's best song, by about infinity times infinity. He will never surpass it.

15. That album had a bunch of good covers.
Not crazy about the Bowie cover, but I don't really like the original song all that much either.

8. One of the few reality shows I actually liked had a few good moments.
I liked this one just to see the guy develope a bit as a performer. He was always good, but kinda flat before this one.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wN2w-1BJstE

I'm sure graywarrior will appreciate this one...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lz3lRRdgOFg

This one just blew me away.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5rL2spNJjc

Not bad for someone who didn't even know the song ahead of time.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoePtAPSvDM

I think this one was a good example of finding the balance between making it his own vs. staying true to the original.

On the softer side, I love some of Rufus Wainwright's covers. :)

9. I love 'Creep'...it often makes me teary-eyed...
It's definitely not Radiohead's best song, but it's still very moving.
This guy does it justice, but doesn't beat the original.
That Dilana chick scares me. :scared:

18. At the 'Battle of the Bands' I went to in high school one of the bands did a Backstreet Boys
or N'sync cover in that style. I don't remember what song, I just remember that it was funny as hell. :)

14. I've got two that I love.
The first is an acappela version of a Dead Kennedys song by Nomeansno (surely the finest band to ever stride upon the planet).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSezVb2tQug

The second is The Residents doing Elvis' Teddy bear, and may be the best cover I've ever heard. I don't see the point of people doing a cover exactly the same as the original, so this is perfect. Way different, and way cool.

24. Jane's Addiction - Ripple
One of those great covers that is totally different from the original, but in a good way. I don't see the point of covers that are just note-for-note recreations.

See also, Devo - Satisfaction.

Here's Gillian Welch and Old Crow doing "The Weight," by The Band:
