Poll question: Which part of winter do you prefer?
Edited on Tue Dec-02-08 06:29 PM by BurtWorm
Only two choices. I prefer the dead of winter.

PS: Defense of the dead of winter: There's a beauty about the stillness of deep winter that I used to love as kid. Now I'm more inclined to go with it because it's closer to spring.

Winter has become the bane of my existence ever since I stopped snowboarding.

Edited to clarify: The weather in the Southern hemisphere while it is winter here. I hate winter! :(

3. Solstice. My entire family becomes depressed during the Winter season, and we actually
celebrate Solstice because the days begin getting longer at that point, and we know Spring and Summer are at least coming.

I general, I have nothing positive whatsoever to say about any month from November to April.

4. Dead of Winter
The Solstice turns the corner and Groundhog Day/Valentine's Day is when the real corner is turned. Dec 21 you know the sun is getting higher, by Feb 14 the sun is high to keep you warm and lighten your mood.

5. After the holidays it gets a little boring
Except the significant snow events are always exciting.

7. I like all parts of winter
Fall with periodic rain (which is how it is now)

Rain with occasional cold, clear days and freezing nights

Warm spring rains where things are starting to get green

It's all good. :D

8. Solstice, by far
Winter is still new and enchanting in December. By late January...February...around these parts March...sometimes April...it gets reeeeaaallly old, ya know?

18. I prefer the dead of winter to the middle of summer
But like you, everything just seems pretty barren to me after the holidays. Early January starts a fresh to-do list, but soon that feeling is gone.

11. Since I'm of German ancestry
I voted for Yule as it is loosely tied to the German celebration of Yule, but not exactly, as they used a lunar calendar:

The pagan Germanic peoples celebrated Yule from late December to early January on a date determined by the lunar Germanic calendar.<2> When the Julian calendar was adopted in northern Europe, Yule was placed on December 25 to correspond with the date of Christmas, but was originally on December 21. (wiki)

But I do like the solstice...

I'm not a pagan but I keep track of the Wheel of the Year as it's of archaeoastronomical interest. Plus I was born on a cross-quarter day.

13. the dead of winter is more sad
but I prefer it... the Solstice period is a change from Autumn. The dead of winter makes everything seem still and pure.

17. As soon as I read your topic line, I thought "the dead of winter."
I love the part of winter after the holidays. No expectations. Nowhere to go. You can just hunker down and wait for the first signs of spring.

I love a big snow storm that makes everyone just stop. It's so quiet and peaceful. Best time of the year, IMO.
