Yeah, the price per pound is cheaper with the bone-in variety, but you're also paying for the bones. Has anybody done the math on this one?

And yes, I'm looking for a good reason not to have to fillet another chicken breast. Yech.

1. Hey, no sex threads!
I think splıʇ breasts are cheaper, but I haven't figured that out by the pound.

2. I stock up on the boneless when its at 1.99 or so.
I think its cheaper. There's a lot of bone and skin in split breast, and unless you are going to make stock or something, its a complete waste.

Not counting the time of course.

I get the split breasts generally only when I plan to grill or something

14. That's what I do too..
Unless you're munching on bones, you get more for your dollar.

3. Cheapest is to get a whole chicken
and cut it up at home.

After that, I sometimes get the large bags of frozen breast fillets on sale at costco for about $10 for 3 lbs.

12. not always
especially if people don't use the bones/backs for stock (a sin!)
and beware of those flash frozen breasts - they have several ounces of water coating them. (of course even "fresh" chicken is allowed to have extra "moisture" added so...

4. I buy the boneless on sale
If you can get them between $1.99-2.99/lb you can stock up and save a lot of money. I have one of those vacuum sealers which keeps them good for a long time. I just used the last of my haul from August when I got a few big tray packs for $1.49/lb. It made about 10 meals for 3 or 4 of us (depending who was home) over the course of several months. Can't beat that and I didn't have to bone them which I hate! Chicken meat grosses me out when it's raw. *shudder*

5. well i'm generally in the "get the whole chicken group"
around here the best deal is very often whole chickens...but i like to use skin and bones to make my chicken stock

second best deal (although i don't see it as often as i once did) is not the breasts but the chicken hindquarters for lack of a better word -- thighs and drumsticks -- sometimes drumsticks are going for 99 cents a pound, thighs for 89 cents a pound, but the hindquarters are as low as 29 cents a pound and you can easily cut them up to get thighs/drumsticks

i do relatively little just with the breasts because the better half GREATLY prefers the dark meat and i have come around to his way of thinking -- it's much more versatile and moist

however, you may already know this tip, but when fileting the chicken breast, it is easier if the breast is still somehow partly frozen, it just seems to go easier than when it's completely defrosted or never frozen chicken breast

10. Or buy chickens from the Amish. That's the best chicken I've ever come across,
excepting the ones we've raised in the family ourselves, but no one in my family raises chickens any more.

13. I DO! Earth Fare and Whole Foods and even Supermarkets have Organic...BUT
...sadly...it's a little better...but if you were an "older/legacy DU'er like me" and you knew what real, fresh chiken was...you'd find that "Organic Stuff" to be just a couple points above the "Nuked Crap" from the rest of the Mainstream Grocery Outlets."

It's all kind of GROSS in taste........if you are a "legacy person." :eyes:

15. What the fuck is a "legacy person" and what's up with the "eye rollies?"
If you have such a problem with chicken, why don't you just kill your own?

And, if you think all the chicken you buy is gross, don't eat it or raise/kill your own.

then get what you like. When they are on sale I think they are fairly competitive.

17. Bone in is always best. The breast retains moisture, better flavor ....
Edited on Wed Dec-03-08 08:56 PM by gbrooks
also the packers remove the tenderloin fillet on
a boneless breast which is the most tender cut.

Save the bones and make a stock for gravy later.
