My doctor really tried to push a flu shot on me
At the end of my check-up she asked me if I had gotten a flu shot to which I replied no. She said I should get one because "once you are diagnosed with asthma the flu can hit you harder and you will be sick longer." Then she left and said she'd see me in 4 months (she's really fucking needy) and told me to wait there for somebody. So I wait, and wait and finally a nurse enters with a flu shot for me.

I inform her that I don't want one. She was surprised but said ok. Now I could leave but on the way out the doctor calls me into her office and says, "I thought we discussed you getting a flu shot."

I responded, "Sure we did but I didn't say I wanted one. Besides, those things cause autism."

She was disappointed in me. So fucking pushy with the flu shots. :eyes:

ps: She was also upset when she found out my lung test went well and that my lungs were fine. She pretty much intimated it was the meds she gave me and I had a lucky day. I think she really wanted my lungs to show something bad.
:eyes:

100. most doctors aren't making anymore money off flu shots
most would make more if you actually got sick and needed treatment.

these kind of careless, offhand remarks really bother me and mainly because they are so poorly reasoned and so poorly informed.

most general practitioners don't make big time money and most aren't making it for giving flu shots.

there is a big sign on the hwy announcing flu shots for $15, with the numeral one clearly painted over the former numeral "2" that used to be there for all these beers and years

i don't know or care who profits from selling these things, but i seriously doubt they're being done as a public service

3. I get sick less without a flu shot
When I was in the Navy, I'd get a flu shot twice a year and I swear I was sick on average 8-10 times per year, each time for about 2-4 days. Every subsequent year since being out I get less and less sick. This last year, I was only sick twice for maybe a day each time.

118. Skipped biology class, eh?
Flu shots prevent the particular form of influenza that they are formulated against. They do not prevent anything other than the particular strains of flu. It does not prevent colds, gout, scabies or anything else.

Have you considered that you get sick less because you are no longer in the Navy? If you were on ship you were in close contact with lots and lots of people under less than ideal sanitary conditions? Or if you were on base you are in contact with people coming in from all over the world?

The flu is not a bad cold. It wipes you out from ten to thirty days.

Bottom line: your evidence of the inefficacy of influenza vaccinations leaves everything to be desired.

(I got mine today. $25 bucks. Cheap by any standard.)

5. Sniffa..;.
Please don't start that bullshit about flu shots and autism. Plus actually you do know that for many doctors the shots are given at a LOSS? Especially the flu shot. Right now, because so many people don't want to spend the money, I think its going to be a really bad season. I've already heard about early cases and the possibly lethal pneumonia that go along with it for some people.
The flu manufacturers actually got their shots out early this year, so there is no shortage. If you have respiratory ailments you SHOULD be getting a shot. Thats what the doc is upset about.

14. Flu CAN indeed wreak havoc on asthmatics
Plus, I don't think there's ever been a single documented case of adult-onset autism.

I also doubt your doctor was "mad" that your asthma looked better. She was probably just HARRIED, as doctors tend to be.

(I'm not encouraging you to get the shot, necessarily - you have to make that determination for yourself - but just thinking that you might go a little easier on your physician....)

101. pnemonia is lethal
a colleague of mine in Virginia has pneumonia and if he were to get the flu his life would be in great danger.

it's not fear mongering to talk about the dangers of pneumonia and flu to an asthmatic. they are dangerous enough to people without health conditions.

23. Flu shots cause autism?
That's a new one.

I think you're confusing the minority theory that some vaccinations, if not properly cleansed, might contribute to autism. Given how many kids are vaccinated every year, who knows? Maybe there's some validity to it.

But, a flu shot causing autism?

Come on. You must know better than that.

And why is your doctor "fucking needy" for wanting to see you in 4 months if you're asthmatic?

many of them have one staff member dedicated to wrangling with insurance companies. in other words, this is a person who often full time, has to fight the insurance companies to get the doctor paid for treatment ALREADY provided. many times, doctors do not get paid for things already provided for.

Those with compromised immune systems, asthmatics, people with COPD and others.

I've had asthma since I was 2. A case of the flu almost killed me 10 years ago. I get a flu shot every year. My airways shut down so fast I didn't have time to go to the doctor. I went to the hospital in a squad.

18. Because you can spread it to people who are really vulnerable to it.
Herd immunity only works if most people (say 95%) are vaccinated. The flu shot is different though because they have to make an educated guess as to the strain and sometimes they are wrong.

I have not yet gotten one myself but I would if my doctor recommended it.

I got them in my teens, 'way back when needles were first invented. Before that, they just used to pound the vaccine into your skin with a big rock. It hurt.

8. I always get one
The two winters I didn't I got the flu, and it was really, really sucky (think ER for a breathing treatment). So far they've worked for me, and I'm no more mentally weird than usual - which is plenty. YMMV. Doctors have the obligation to recommend treatment, but it's up to the patient to decide if they want it.

She may have thought you were kidding when you mentioned autism. It's not something you can get as an adult. The shot can have other nasty side effects in people over the age of puberty, but not that one.

89. Same here......
In the last decade or so I neglected to get a flu shot twice, and both years I got frighteningly sick with the flu. I never forget anymore.

I don't understand the anti-flu shot mania. Time was the shots didn't work very well. But with advanced computer tracking they are able to pinpoint which viruses will be problematic (and put them in the vaccines) with much greater accuracy. The shots work great for me, and I am grateful for them.

Also the flu shot I took had no thimersol in it, no mercury preservatives

That's a good line - but having had the flu once - when I was a young and healthy 24 year old, I wouldn't be quite so cavalier. It knocked me and my husband on our asses for a week. Having asthma would make it much worse IMHO.

I was reacting to the over critical treatment towards a doctor who is just doing a job and in the course of doing that gave you some advice and treatment that was well founded.

I was also reacting to the too lightly given quip about flu shots causing autism as well as your comment downthread about pneumonia warnings being "fear-mongering" in order to make people rich.

After that kind of talk, color me skeptical about your observations.

That said, I was not there, I'm judging you based on what you've said here, not only how you described the situation but how you described other things that I can judge the veracity of.

But back to this whole flu shot thing...you do realize that it's all just a mathematical projection that the strain of flu that will eventually reach the U.S will actually be the same one you're receiving the shot for in the first place? There are so many mutated flu strains out there it's not even funny.

if you think the people who told you all those things aren't scamming you that is. (flu shots causing autism, just being a way to make money, etc.)

and you worry about fear mongering --come on Sniffa.

you have to weigh the evidence on each side of what you are hearing.

the risks of flu, the benefits of flu shots, the risks of pneumonia and the treatment of said conditions are well documented.

the risks of flu shots, the connection to autism, while theoretically possible are not well documented at all.

on balance, when you make decisions, you should be weighing evidence and you don't choose the option with the flimsy evidence against that with substantial evidence. at least you don't and then pride yourself on not being taken.

BTW, why do you bother going to see a doctor if you don't trust the doctor's judgement? IMO, you should get a doctor you trust and quit wasting this doctor's time.

32. Maybe not autism,
but it has been documented that an annual flu shot increases the chance for alzheimer's. And they are barely effective for what they are made for. And furthermore, if the poster doesn't want a flu shot, then maybe we should respect that decision.

42. Flu shot for you protects a lot of other people as well
It's a "public" health measure. The medical community not only wants to spare high risk people from complications of influenza but they want to prevent as many people as they can from unwittingly transmitting the virus to other people, a number of whom many be infants, elderly, or medically vulnerable. You may get over the flu but the grandmother who caught it from you may die and you may never know about that. Some studies have shown that the elderly do not always get as much immunity as would be ideal from their own immunization, so it is helpful if the population surrounding them is immunized. In general the immunity of every individual is improved if the surrounding population is immunized.

And, sniffa, asthma is a serious chronic condition, so your doctor is being responsible by seeing you every three or four months. A lot of poor people with asthma would love to see a doctor for a $10 co-pay.

66. Asthma is always serious
I was always told when I was young I had "mild asthma" I have allergies. Most of the time my pulmonary function tests have been great. Allergies set mine off. Whatever causes the asthma, its important to avoid it. If it is a cat, then either allergy shots or getting rid of the cat or Sniffa I guess. But there is NO SUCH THING as MILD ASTHMA all asthma can kill, and if he is obstructed by allergies, or other airway disease, he is more vulnerable to pulmonary infections, influenza causes pulmonary obstruction to some degree, and with someone who is compromised to any degree, it can make it worse.

Honestly bi-baby, I lurve ya man, and I'm not being a hypo here, get a flu shot.

79. Well, they don't care to test him for allergies, they
just want to pump him up with 2 asthma drugs and 1 allergy drug (Advair, Albuterol, and Loratadine).

And he does great on those. BUT:

Treat the symptoms, don't bother to find out the cause... yawn. He was *fine* until we got the 2nd cat (symptoms started less than a week after she got here), but they don't seem to think that's an issue. Pardon my lack of faith in these particular medical people.

:)

And when you score better than most non-smokers on a pulmonary test, I think they should look at the differential diagnoses. YMMV.

Years ago, I asked our son's pediatrician how he managed to stay healthy, being around sick kids all the time. He told me that the pneumonia vaccine worked not only agains pneumonia, but also against other bacterial respiratory diseases.

He really does believe that the Pneumovax is what has kept him healthy. And he's a damn good doctor.

I got one, and my arm hurt for a week, but I haven't had a single URI since then, ten years ago.

72. True story
My dentist created cavities in my teeth with the little sharp pointy tool he had.

14 years with no cavities, go to this dentist, he pokes one of my wisdom teeth(never had them pulled), and another tooth and says well they should be pulled they are to far back to clean. I feel the poke. In a couple months I have two cavities.

Going to the dentist as a kid, I got probably 15 cavities, not going to the dentist, I have not gotten one cavity. Not a single one.

I think some doctors and dentist are no different then the auto mechanic telling you they got to do work that is not needed, or only wants to create work for themselves.

Not all of them, but some of them are.

135. That's just pure ignorance
You should educate yourself before posting such drivel. Each year the flu varieties developing in southeast Asia are studied and scientists predict which of them will spread. These are the ones the vaccine is developed against. Last year's prediction wasn't very good, so the flu shot gave only partial protection.

My wife has scarring in her lungs from a case of the flu from last year, and that was with the vaccine reducing the severity of symptoms. Influenza, that is, the real flu, is not to be fucked with.

The flu shot is an easy way to spare yourself what may be a seriously nasty week or two (or worse) of illness.

the flu kills lots and lots of people every year. it kills more among those who are in special categories (weakened immune systems, etc.). combined with other problems, the flu can be lethal and become that way quite quickly.

146. Because, of course, sniffa is always an eminently sensible person
who's never been controversial here before.

:sarcasm: , because that is needed.

The thing is, there are people on this thread who took it seriously, and said it would have been the right thing to do. Now, unless sniffa produces a public list of "my true opinions on things", then some people won't know if he is sensible on this particular subject, or if he's another 'western medicine is baaad' woo.

123. Why do you have a picture of a woman with a black eye for an avatar?
Is that some general protest against violence again women or does it have special meaning?

128. Now that you mention it, today is December 6, which in Canada is...
NATIONAL DAY OF REMEMBRANCE AND ACTION ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

December 6
Did you know that December 6 is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada? Established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada, this day marks the anniversary of the murders in 1989 of 14 young women at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal. They died because they were women.

As well as commemorating the 14 young women whose lives ended in an act of gender-based violence that shocked the nation, December 6 represents an opportunity for Canadians to reflect on the phenomenon of violence against women in our society. It is also an opportunity to consider the women and girls for whom violence is a daily reality, and to remember those who have died as a result of gender-based violence. And finally, it is a day on which communities can consider concrete actions to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls.

144. I got a flu shot this year, just to be proactive in giving the tadpoles autism.
I usually don't though. I got the flu in '88 and '89 and was sick as a dog both times, but once I started taking vitamins regularly, I've never gotten it again.

They talked me into it this year though, just because they said it could be a real problem if I got it while pregnant, and I figured, why not get the tadpoles infected with autism now, just to get it over with?

148. If you think I'm "poisoned" and need to be "cured" to are no better then the homophobes that..
Edited on Wed Dec-10-08 09:13 PM by Odin2005
...think being gay is an "illness" that needs to be cured. I'm not sick and I don't need a cure. Autistic traits are genetic, that is a FACT. denying the genetic nature of Autism is equivalent to saying gay people choose to be gay. Einstien, Jefferson, and Bill Gates are thought to be on/been on the Autism spectrum. Were they "poisoned" and needed to be "cured"?

That is hilarious.

I won't take them either, but that sure isn't the reason.
