Yesterday I discovered a new group of people who should not be allowed in public:
Parents who change their kids in the middle of the fucking store. Seriously, they put changing tables in the god damn restrooms, is it that difficult to walk a few hundred feet to go use them?

Oh and this was at a mall so it wasn't like they could use the "customers only restroom" excuse.

3. You ever tried to use those narrow baby stations when the rugrat's a wiggling?
Those things are for optimists who don't have kids.

Sometimes you need a giant flat floor that they can't fall off and is easy to pin them to, enabling safe and effective diaper changage.

5. I did LK's while he was in the stroller.
Those restroom changer things are usually fucking gross, and nobody else is sitting in the stroller.

6. At least the strollers have a cover.
This parent had her kid like out on display while she was doing the deed. And this was right next to a restaurant too. :puke:

7. The cover's not really much use, it's more for rain and sun.
But I'd only do that for quick wet-only changes, and with a boy you have to keep a diaper over all the working parts or you're like to wind up getting peed on.

If the kid was shitty and needed wiping, I'd go change him in the car or in a quiet spot outside if the weather was reasonable. Or in a store bathroom with some space, like one of the nicer department stores, or a children's store with a separate diaper changing/breastfeeding room.

Not on one of those bathroom changers though, those things are usually rickety and dangerous.

10. A poo-poo diaper is a different deal. A tee diaper can be changed
almost anywhere. No food places obviously.

11. Exactly.
My personal objects of diaper hatred would be: People who leave "disposable" diapers in parking lots and people who throw "disposable" diapers in trash cans near where people will be eating.

12. Yes! If a parent doesn't want to carry a full diaper to a trash can how in hell
do they think someone else wants to pick it up and throw it away?!? (I know, they don't think)
When at the park I scoop my dog's poop and drop the bag in a trash can away from any picnic table.
When I'm visiting my mom I go to Walden Pond with my brothers. We go to a little beach at the other end, and we're disgusted when we see disposable diapers left on the public beach near the road. While walking by this statue of Thoreau I suggested that we put a disposable diaper in his outstretched hand, as he appears to peer at it with disdain!

20. "People who leave 'disposable' diapers in parking lots "
I was "socializing" my Akita when it was smaller at a mall. No leash after a week or so and all was well... UNTIL!

He got a hold of a poopy diaper in the parking lot. It was a very disgusting remainder of the day. Oh, did I mention that the mall was 1.25 hours from house?

:puke:

This is my sweet girl "Baby"- She'll be two in January. The black lab is Waylon :D

:hide: Don't mean to hijack the thread so....

Yucky on the diaper thingy. I'd always take them out to the van and change my kiddos, no need to bother others with it and I refused to use one of the bathroom fold downs. Ew.

9. I can actually legitimately comment on this now that I have a kid.
When people usually do that, it is because it is the best option at the time. I can see where it may be gross or bothersome, but as a parent, there are times you have to do what you have to do. I would, however, never do that in a restaurant.

13. They can't take 5 minutes to walk outside?
I have never seen a child changed out in the open in a public mall. That's because there is always another option, though it may be less convenient.

Unless the kid is in physical danger, the diaper can wait at least five more minutes until more privacy can be obtained.

16. If the diaper was just a tee tee diaper, I really don't see it being too
bothersome. Unless naked baby bottoms bother you. Usually you don't see or smell anything with a tee tee diaper. If it was the other, then absolutely they should change it in a restroom. However, when you become a parent, you do things you never thought you would do. All of those screaming kids in Target that used to seem to follow me around, well, now I feel the parent's pain.

21. Well, no offense to those parents, but those screaming kids
in Target should be disciplined. Which they usually are not.

Once upon a time (in fact, just over a decade ago) kids like that were really much more of a rarity. I never acted like that as a child, because if I did my parents punished me adequately. Lately it seems like parents are scared they'll "upset" the child by disciplining them--so they opt to upset everyone else instead. The sad thing is that everyone ends up hating the kids, when it's really the parent's fault for letting the kid run wild rather than be "mean" and discipline him.

I'm sure you are a great parent, though, and don't let your kids run wild!

:hi:

it's in a movie theatre or a nice restaurant.

And your baby is so cute!

14. Wow. That's a new one. I can't imagine anyone TRYING to make the process
more difficult, but that would do it...

So that makes me wonder. Was the mall crowded? Was it just one parent? Were there other kids with them (like pre-teen age) or something?

The only thing I can think of is that this person was in a predicament. Either the bathroom was too busy, or the changing table was broken (they'd rather put the kid on the cleaner hall floor than the bathroom (ick) floor or (ick) counter, they were male (or female) and had kids that were the opposite sex - too young to leave alone and/or too old to bring in the "other" restroom... the infant was sick and there was some urgency involved...

I don't know.

When I see or hear about things like this I have taught myself to imagine scenarios that someone may be dealing with that I have no clue about. It started because I found myself (at times) in the position of being the person that makes everyone else mad - I can't even remember the circumstances, but I was in the middle of a trauma and I goofed and did something rude that I would never have done under normal conditions.

So now if I see someone in the express lane with 25 items instead of 10, I can either get mad and let them know it by sighing and shifting my weight, or I can think... what if they just found out their only child has cancer? What if they just lost their home? What if.... it actually ends up occupying my brain so much that I forget about being impatient.

I don't know if this mid-floor diaper changer was being rude or not. But I've just learned that it's a much more inviting and gentle world if I choose to think that other things might be in their way. Sometimes I end up helping people that I initially wanted to strangle (metaphorically, of course).

It makes a difference. It's REALLY helpful with "road rage" which I do not have unless people are really putting everyone's life in danger. This coming from someone who was knocked into a tree because of a couple of impatient people and after a few transfusions and nearly not making it... here I am. : ) Those guys - I'm mad at. Still. Everyone else, I make up stories for and it helps my heart out - doesn't matter if it's true or not. Getting angry and stressed and mad is worse for me. So, I like to make up stories instead... : )

19. If it's just a pee diaper
I could change my daughter's pee diapers sitting right next to you and you'd never know I was doing it. A poopy diaper is a little bit more of a challenge, I'd generally take her out to the car for those.

Edited on Tue Dec-09-08 02:35 PM by dawgmom
I am not making this up. About 15 years ago at a K-Mart, a saw a woman roll up to one of those big tables that they put clothing out on. She scooped up half the clothes and dropped them on the floor, took her baby out of the body-carrier and laid her on the table. Then she took a box of diapers out of her cart, opened the box and took one out, changed the baby's VERY poopy diaper, popped the baby back in the carrier, left the open box of diapers AND the poopy diaper lying on the table, and walked away.
