8. What inspired this little crudfest was all the Barry Manilowism of the past few days

which somehow stuck "Ready to Take a Chance Again" in my head. I thought that this might be the theme to "Arthur 2: On the Rocks" (it might well be; I don't feel like looking it up), which in turn made me think how precipitous was Chris Cross' career decline that by the time they could slap together a sequel script he was no longer hot enough to ask to do the theme song. And thus his song got stuck in my mind and I'm so nice I thought I'd share it with the whole classroom.:)

In the 80s I was totally bourgeois, but not so much so as to have very high regard for Cross or Manilow. I'm only a little ashamed that I still have all my ELO records.

but "Ready to Take a Chance Again" was not the theme of "Arthur 2: On the Rocks." It was the theme from a Chevy Chase/Goldie Hawn movie, "Foul Play," released in 1978, before even Christopher Cross had heard of Christopher Cross.

Now, it's true that Christopher Cross got the snub when it came time to do the Arthur 2 theme song, but it didn't exactly make the difference between being a has-been and lasting fame for him...the theme of "Arthur 2" was "Love Is My Decision" by Chris DeBurgh. Not exactly a smash hit.

However, it did give me a good memory, of a friend in high school who became an ex-friend (long story, too stupid to relate). She was all proud of herself because her father was some bigwig at a corporation that sponsored concerts, so she got to go backstage and meet Christopher Cross. Woo fuckin' hoo. I laughed at how she bragged about that in school.
