The BlueIris Semi-Nightly Poetry Break, 12/14/08
"The River Between Us"

Yes, this push/pull thing
this whatever, this everything-works-
so-run, and then tonight
the kids are with me on the couch
and the little one says: "Well,
why don’t your kids and dog come
over here like we come to your house?"
But then she remembers my kids are away
at school and Barney, well, he’s not a dog
that visits much; he mostly stays
and gaurds the house. And we talk
about why and all that, why it hasn't happened
yet, I mean, and I’m thinking about how
I like when you all come over
and spend the night and then
it’s the next morning, a tumble
of kids and dogs and teddy bears. And I know,

I know about this virtual distancing,
this faraway thing, this across
the river, yes, this river
between us; and what and how it needs to be
there for now, for safety and all that,
and what it would mean to really acknowledge
what we have here. Or maybe what kind of boat
we'd need for that kind of river. Or what if
we just let it go and see, just see how we can do this
together.

Hell yeah. This is a keeper.

I also like that the author's last name is "pond." :)

2. That's what I say.
Because, truly, how great a last name is "Pond"?

4. My dear BlueIris!
Interesting...

Love...and the push/pull of desire.

Wanting to be there, but still........afraid.

I like it!

Thank you!

6. nice
blended family sort of thing. I like the last line a lot:

"... Or what if
we just let it go and see, just see how we can do this
together."

7. My favorite part is:
"...yes, this river
between us; and what and how it needs to be
there for now, for safety and all that,
and what it would mean to really acknowledge
what we have here."

"(F)or safety and all that..."

Sometimes, it's necessary to have distance in order to be together.
