My kitteh is having a hard time going potty.
She's 17 years old and such things can I suppose be expected, but it's a weekend and there aren't any emergency vets in this frickin' town.

It may be an odd sounding question, but how can I help her with her task? She's been trying all day with no luck, and I don't know what to do for her.

1. Feed her a little pumpkin.
Get the canned pumpkin and make sure it doesn't have cornstarch or other nasty stuff in it.

About a tablespoon or so should do it.

2. The problem is, I don't know which task is involved.
I changed her box this afternoon just so I would have a blank paper to view, so to speak, and so far nothing of ANY nature has been deposited.

She's such a finicky eater I don't know if she'd go for pumpkin, but it's worth a try.

3. I took a guess.

Most cats like pumpkin, even the finicky ones. Could be she's a little dehydrated. Does she eat dry food? If so, make her some "gravy" ... water down some baby food (again, get the kind without cornstarch in it) or some canned tuna liquid or canned food. I'm just guessing, but what goes in usually comes out eventually.

5. I had this problem with a similarly aged kitty.
Canned pumpkin, for SURE. But it won't be an immediate thing - you should give it to her regularly if she's having this problem and it will help. I mixed mine w/ canned food. PLAIN - not the pie filling, btw.

Also - and you're not going to like this one but - give her an enema. They sell baby-sized fleet enemas. That WILL make her go. It's very dangerous to let her go too long without "going" - and it's probably what's blocking her urine as well. Make sure she's well hydrated - get some high-quality canned food as it will help give her some moisture. You probably don't have any lactated ringers around like I do but - that's the best way to get fluids into her, by doing sub-q fluids.

The enema isn't as bad as you'd think - for you or the cat. Mine finally went when I gave him one but he vomited first, then pooped in the dog crate, then ran into the bathroom where he let go of his bladder. He felt SOOO much better though.

6. She eats wet food normally
and I just saw her at her water bowl a while ago, so I guess that's something.

I actually just got some mineral oil and gave her a bit in an eyedropper- she didn't freak out, anyway. I'll give her a bit more in a while. I have no idea what a kitteh-sized dose is, but it can't be very much!
