Poll question: Best fictional Ultra-Tech device (read the qualifications!)
Edited on Thu Dec-25-08 10:08 PM by Orrex
Let's keep this fun: if the device has a bland name or has become part of the vernacular (e.g., "hyperdrive" and "warp drive"), it's disqualified.

Incidentally, This Island Earth is a much better novella than film. It's surprisingly well-written, even though it suffers from the standard patriarchal vibe rampant in s/f of the time ("the time," of course, refers to almost anything pre-Ripley).

1. I guess a tasp (Niven) is too bland a name
so I guess I would go with boosterspice, also from Niven.

4. Tasp is okay with me
If it had been called, say, "the stimulator," that would have been too bland IMO.

2. The Illudium PU-36 Space Modulator.
Top that. Except that I don't think it's fictional.
