If the tally of your purchases totals a year, mention a historical event pertinent to that year! See if they know it!

Tonight, I had a total of $14.92. She said "Your total is fourteen ninety-two." I responded "Cool, that was a good year for Columbus!" She had no clue whatsoever. (about age 18 and I suspect history, much like phy ed, is no longer taught... though in my day nobody liked phy ed so I can understand why it was nixed...)

I'm just glad the total wasn't 10.66... and if I was in Hastings, MN, that'd be a double-whammy for the poor sod I'd be talking to...

4. In MY day
or in my childhood, actually, cashiers actually had to FIGURE OUT how much change to give you! I doubt most of them could do that today. Now THAT would improve their acuity!

Damn I can't believe she didn't know what 1492 signified.

PS- I just asked my 14-year-old and she said, "Columbus". Phew!

6. I hear ya
But with debit cards, this "change" is only associated with politicians and treated as a verb. :D

Now I can still recite change on cue, but I'm 36 and therefore a fragile, decrepit geezer to somebody aged 14...

8. Oh I do that a lot.
I had the total 18.14 yesterday, so of course I had to sing her the first 4 lines of the Battle of New Orleans.

9. please don't do this in
a crowded store. Save it for low key places. After dealing with humans all day, you don't want to break their spirit.
