The picture on the package makes them look like hotdogs but I think they are sausages because they are taking a long time to cook.

Damn...I think this is going to turn out bad. Please if anyone knows what they are, tell me it is ok to cook them in olive oil.

And yeah I could have looked up how to cook them but I was IMing with my daughter and no one is home and I'm not even hungry so I just guessed at the olive oil vs. butter - who knows, maybe I was supposed to boil them.

6. Simmer them, then finish them off in the frying pan.
They're really best grilled but there's nothing wrong with cooking them in liquid for a bit before finishing them up in a pan. Simmer them in beer if you have some.

7. I would have boiled them in a little water first, then grilled them.
If you add a little water to the pan and cover it to steam them, they should be fine. Yes, they would take longer to cook than hot dogs... maybe 20-25 minutes or so?

10. Ok. so should I add water now even though there is olive oil in the pan
and they've been cooking for about 15 minutes?

just saying.. hot oil +liquid = splattering pain

EDIT: I really don't know the correct answer after going oil first. I did that the first time I messed with them and ended up chopping the brats all up and making flat sandwiches after I was sure meat was cooked.

12. Yes, just a small amount. Enough to cover the bottom of the pan.
Watch you don't get spattered. Cover quickly!

Turn them a couple of times. When the water is gone, they should be done.

20. NEVER BOIL BRATS! Braise them or poach them. But DO NOT BOIL. And USE BEER.
Edited on Wed Jan-28-09 08:10 PM by Rabrrrrrr
Their little skins will break and let out all the delicious grease that makes a brat worth biting into if you boil them.

Braise or poach in beer and onions, and then, when possible, grill them to get that wonderful grill taste.

Serve on bun with sauerkraut or mustard (ketchup is for FIBs and Minnesotans) and enjoy the living hell out of it!

23. Probably a dumb question, and I may know already...what is braising?
I'm sure I've had foods prepared in this manner, but I'm not sure

24. Poaching is cooking something submerged in water; braising is partly submerged.
Most meats, except seafood, cook better with a braise than in a poach.

But the concept is the same - cover (or partly cover) the item with a liquid (beer, water, stock, wine, etc.), bring the temperature of the liquid to like 180-210 (never boiling) and cook it there.

One can do that on the stove in a pot, or in the oven.

16. *GASP* I can't believe
a Wisconsinite has not replied to your thread. Here we typically boil bratwurst in beer, grill and serve. If the party continues, we keep the grilled brats in the beer "bath".

fyi - Brat (rhymes with “rot”, not with “hat”) – Short for bratwurst, the most popular kind of sausage in Wisconsin. Johnsonville brats are famous throughout the country. Typically served with mustard and sauerkraut. Best when marinated in beer, butter and onions after frying on a barbeque.

19. I saw Paula Dean the other day cooking "brats" (rhymes with hats). Fucking southerner idiot.
I felt like calling her up, but then remembered she's dumb as a post, so let it slide.

25. I just took it for granted that EVERYBODY knew what "brats" were
When I was a kid, in the summer we'd have them at least once a week, right off the grill. Usually soaked in Old Milwaukee, or Old Style, depending on what your folks were drinking at the time.

27. Brats in beer..........
I grew up with kielbasa in beer, and learned about brats when I lived in Chicago. Along with half smokes. Oh, yum!!!

Someone told me they were originally made with brains, but now they're pork. I asked my butcher - who makes them in his store - as I bought some for Sunday and he assured me that they were pork.

Oh, they are good............................
