We're getting our new fridge delivered today. Etiquette question:
Edited on Thu Jan-29-09 07:36 AM by Lyric
Are appliance delivery people supposed to be tipped, and if so, how much?

5. They have to carry one fridge out, then bring the other one in.
And there's a crapload of snow and ice outside. I'm guessing that's a yes, lol.

3. Just wear skimpy clothes when they make the delivery
And never post silly questions when I'm in a pevy mood.

7. Some are not allowed to accept tips.
Depends on who they're delivering for. We tried a few times and only ended up embarrassing them.

10. These guys are coming from Best Buy.
That was the best deal on a fridge that would fit into our "space" that we could find. I'm not sure what their policies are.

11. Policy my ass
I don't care what the store policy is, tips are always appreciated :)

Considering they don't make that much on tips, even 10 bucks will be appreciated. Enough for a nice snack at 7-11. Or show them your tits like someone else suggested.

We've offered tips and been told they're not allowed to take them. We've even said they didn't have to tell anyone, but they still wouldn't.

Of course, we still offer ...

30. This isn't about delivery people, but -
the courtesy clerks at the Albertsons where I shop are absolutely NOT ALLOWED to accept tips, and they will be fired if caught accepting tips.

34. That is true. Our Albertson's is now a Brookshire's and they can't
accept tips. One guy did, however, when it was pouring down rain.

I prefer to load my own groceries, so I don't go there too much.

9. I've never tipped one.
I did tip some moving guys once.
It was hot as hades and they had three flights of steps to go up.
I wouldn't give them any more than $20 probably closer to $10.
:hi:

12. I wouldn't, but an interesting thing I learned about my big-screen delivery:
I offered the guy who installed our big screen a nice tip, then was embarrassed as hell when I realized that he was an independent operator getting paid by the bigboxer. He did an outstanding job, cleaned up impeccably, then gave me his card.

The nice thing was, I've sent LOTS of biz his way, he did a great job. I tell friends to have the stuff delivered and Mike will install it for much less than the store will charge.

13. I always tip them...
Who couldn't use a few extra bucks? If I am light on cash, I tip them whatever I can afford and explain to them that I would like to give them more, but I am light. They always appreciate the gesture, no matter what the amount.

But that was a matress delivery by two guys. For something as annoying as moving a fridge, you might want to up it to $20 (total, $10 each)

22. Definitely..........not
In the US, we have become a tip happy society. Americans tip more than anyone else in the world. In many cases tipping is customary and expected, for instance wait staff at restaurants, skycaps, barbers, etc. Where tipping is customary and expected, I generally tip generously, but I don't tip where tipping isn't customary and shouldn't be expected. I've seen people try to tip airline pilots. It gets pretty ridiculous at times. There are plenty of etiquette web sites that list when it's appropriate to tip and how much. It's not a bad idea to familiarize yourself with those situations.

24. Only if you do business with them on a regular basis
If you do business with the same UPS guy at work, get him a gift at Xmas for instance. This year I gave my mailman, who has served me for the past 10 years, a $20 gift certificate and both the garbage truck guys a $10 gift certificate each. So yes, in certain circumstances it is customary, but not the one mentioned.

Christmas is a great time of year to remember those people who serve you regularly. Since it only occurs once a year, holiday tipping can be a source of holiday stress, but it need not be so. I recommend a gift or a tasteful Christmas card with a tip inside. Delivery should occur in the month of December prior to Christmas day. Tip those who serve you all year long and with whom you have a personal relationship.

25. Tip for heavy-lifting delivery? Twenty bucks, minimum.
I don't accept that "not allowed to accept tips" crap. Tip the person. "No tips" policies are formulated by $1000-suit asshats who want to keep their serfs on slave wages. Screw the hell out of them. I come from a middle-class family, and our sympathies are entirely with working people. Tip, always; and whenever possible, overtip.

That is all...

28. I would not tip them.
The tipping culture is really out of hand, in my opinion. When I have furniture or appliances delivered, I usually pay a delivery fee for the service, and the delivery people are paid a good wage for their job.

33. Throw them $5 each for basic delivery and up to $20 each if they do a very good job.
That's about the going rate.

on the other hand, itipping says no tip for appliance deliveries:

http://www.itipping.com/tip-appliance-delivery.htm

I tend to give them $5 each for a simple, efficient delivery and more when it involves anything more complicated than plugging in an appliance.

35. Absolutely.
I'm happy to see that most of the responses here are in favor of tipping. Probably an indication of the number of people here who have worked in service industries.

Tip what you can afford -- but I would say a minimum of $5.00 per delivery person. $10 each is what I would give.

36. I tip based on whether the person is providing a service beyond their job requirements.
Some people make so little that a tip is actually part of their base income....waiters, food delivery, etc...
Those people I always tip.

Lifting that fridge and installing it is a basic part of their job. The only thing I would consider above and beyond would be moving it throw snow.

I'd probably give them five bucks each for dealing with that.
