Update on Lost Dog: it looks like we might have found his owners!
Edited on Thu Jan-29-09 09:55 PM by Lyric
We got a call earlier tonight from someone who said that his neighbors lost two dogs last week, one of which matched our newspaper ad description pretty well. We told him that there were pics up on Craigslist, and he said he'd contact his neighbors and get back to us ASAP.

Well they called back just a bit ago, and Rhythm talked to the people who lost the dogs. She (the owner) described the blue collar, and she described the black "eyeliner" markings around his eyes, so we put her on speakerphone and let her "talk" to the dog, who promptly perked up and started prancing around the kitchen, trying to nose the phone.

She's on her way here now; if this is indeed her dog, then his name is "Ruger," and he's just shy of one year old. He seems to respond to that name, too, but I'm still not going to count those proverbial chickens until they get here and we know for sure. We were right. though--she has a little boy not much younger than LyricKid--Rhythm could hear him in the background, saying "My puppy?? Did they find my puppy??" That explains why he latched onto LyricKid so quickly.

Good vibes one last time--very shortly, we very well might know if dog and family are truly reunited. I'm so happy for him, but sad a little as well. He's been here almost a week, and we're going to miss him.

There is one EXTREMELY happy dog who's getting into the car right now with His People. Man, you should have seen him when they came in the door--hah! He jumped up and went crazy--it was just adorable. Apparently, this pup managed to wander all the way from the other side of town! He followed the Rail Trail for several miles from Sabraton over to our area, near Star City.

Still...HAPPY ENDING! Thank you all so much for following our little dramatic saga.

Goodbye Ruger.

Oh--and according to his owners, he is a Boxer/Beagle mix. Go fig!

7. Awwwww
Guess that boy was really happy to gp home with his peeps, but it is a little bittersweet...I was thinking he'd have a very loving home with you. You did a very good thing & made a boy & his folks and a dog very happy. World needs more people like you. It's a nice story to end my day with.

I've got a dog JUST like him, only a bit older.

15. Oh, I'm so so happy

Once upon a time, I was that heartbroken kid.

Though, I can't believe he made it all the way from Sabraton to your place! I hope they traveled together and that the other dog is somewhere close by as well.

17. We thought about it, and what we came up with was this:
he used the Rail Trail. It runs right behind our mobile home park, and of course it also runs through Sabraton. The woman who came to pick him up told us that they live right beside it, and that they often go for bike rides/walks with the dogs on the Rail Trail. I'm thinking that he decided to take himself for a walk, but then got too far away to realize which direction was "home." She said they got out because a UPS delivery man left their gate open when he put a package on their porch, not realizing that their back door had a "dog door." Apparently, these folks came home last Thursday evening to find the gate open, a package on the porch, and the dogs missing.

We didn't find him until Saturday, so that explain why he followed LyricKid home and refused to budge from the porch--he was starving! He hadn't eaten since Thursday afternoon, and he could probably smell Toby's dog food. Add a friendly, snuggly kid in the mix, and it's no wonder he latched onto us so easily.

I'm just glad that *we* found him before it got severely cold that night, and I'm even gladder that we were able to get him back home.

20. Poor pup!
With the effect of all the hills, it's sometimes hard to realize how close some places actually are to one another, particularly as the crow flies. And, I left Mo-town before the Rail-Trail project was started.

As for the UPS guy: grrr. The mister had to have a talk with the building manager once about the fact that his workmen regularly would go through our back door and gate to bring in equipment if they were working in our apartment, making it easy for the dog to get out. Luckily, that dog was a rather mellow guy who mainly slept all day. Our current goldie, however, would be in the next state by the time we got home from work.

Not only did you probably save that dog's life, but you're saving a family (complete with little kiddo) a world of heartbreak. May karma smile on you.

Best vibes for a successful reunion. Keep the kleenex handy...

on edit...saw the reunion. Congrats and thanks.

11. Not yet. The other dog is much older, which worries me.
Edited on Fri Jan-30-09 08:09 AM by Lyric
Ruger was not even a year old yet, but the other dog is 13 years old. The one thing he has going in his favor is that he's a Great Pyrenees/Golden Retriever mix, so he has really long, thick fur; he'll be faring better in the cold than Ruger was. She says that he's also strikingly beautiful, with really long, thick, cream-colored fur, so that beauty makes it more likely that someone will take him in. People are sadly superficial about such things, but at least there might be a benefit to it this time.

We told her we'd be on the lookout, just in case anyone else around here found a dog matching that description.

14. Yes she did.
She was so anxious to come get him that she rushed over to a total stranger's house on the other side of town at 10:30 pm with two little kids in their PJs with her, lol.

I was nothing but tears at THAT reunion, believe me. The minute she came through the door, he jumped right up to her and started licking her face and dancing around. The older child hugged the dog and didn't let go until we leashed him and walked him out to her car.

I am SO glad that he got his family back. We saved her number in case her other dog shows up somewhere around here.
