8. I am getting closer and closer to making a decision about that.
I already told Susan about it.

I'm thinking about having a mid-Atlantic meetup this summer. If everybody is game, we could have ALOT of DUers show.

Would like to plan it for when CreekPuppy comes out here.

6. god, yes
I love that game. I need to buy one.... I think I have three sets back in the US - I've started giving them away when I can. It seems like every time I move I need to buy a new board.

I've been playing an online version called landgrab (www.landgrab.net) with some friends lately. Should we set up a DU version?

7. All I know is they're making A sci-fi game of Risk without Australia (or the rest of the planet)
How the hell can you have Risk without Australia? You MUST hold Australia.

11. Even Eddie Izzard knows that!
:D

Yes, so this is all true. And so, yes. So in Europe, we had empires. Everyone had them - France and Spain and Britain and Turkey! The Ottoman Empire, full of furniture for some reason. And the Austro-Hungarian Empire, famous for fuck all! Yes, all they did was slowly collapse like a flan in a cupboard.

And the German empire, very organized, they’d always build an empire, “ein, zwei, ein, zwei," build an empire, very Prussian, and then they'd celebrate with a World War! And then lose the whole fucking empire by the end of the war. In the 30s, Hitler, Czechoslovakia, Poland, France, World War II... the Russian front, not a good idea...! Hitler never played “Risk” when he was a kid...! ‘Cause, you know, playing “Risk,” you could never hold on to Asia. That Asian-Eastern European area, you could never hold it, could you? Seven extra men at the beginning of every go, but you couldn't fucking hold it! Australasia, that was the one! Australasia, all the purple ones! Get everyone on Papua New Guinea and just build up and build up...

24. I once played a game of that that lasted all summer.
Christ, that game is involved. But, really, as soon as someone gets long-range heavy bombers, it's pretty much a done deal.

13. Well, I've mastered the on-line game, so that's boring now.
I win every time in 4-5 turns and without even bothering to take and hold Australia first.

I bought the board game to play with my wife. But the edition I got has these impossible little figurines instead of the original roman numerals. So it takes way too damn long to set up.

18. thats the one I play...its not bad
but I roll...horribly, horribly bad against the color Pink, that color kicks me to the curb all the time....if I bring 10 armies against 3 of Pinks, I lose...bleh, but it is fun.

I don't play online though....

19. If I go after Australia first I win almost every game
So to make it more challenging, I ignore Australia and take South America first. That's more of a 50-50 win/loss.

20. I got three options, I go with Australia
if I take Australia I win all the time(except once)...if pink pushes me out, which it seems to do about half the stinking time, and then I decide to go through North America, or S. America...usually N. America cause I got some force there, and brown/grey usually fight it out in S. America and push my little two armies out fast....

I haven't tried Europe/Africa, I see no reason/how to win trying to take Europe/Africa at first...yellow, and pink both got some grip on both of those countries.

21. A side note, I've won the game in 10 moves
before on the Very Clever setting...not that very clever means they are any good, they usually just roll better, and aren't that much smarter in when/how they attack.

but it actually means "to play risk and drink Mountain Dew."

He lies because it's dorky.

28. Risk is for zit-faced teenagers and little kids.
I prefer something more adult like Axis and Allies. It's complex, encourages team play, and is particularly fun when you play for shots. Vodka for The USSR, Either Jaegermeister or schnapps for Germany, Scotch for The UK, Sake for Japan, and Jack Daniels for the US.

As an aside, I want the new Anniversary edition that costs $100 and brings a whole new level of complexity to the game. However playing for shots becomes more problematic. You can use Grappa for Italy, but what kind of booze would you use for the Chinese?

31. All these people convinced that you have to take Australasia
I'm not so convinced - it doesn't allow for expansion because beyond there, there's only Asia, which is too big, with too many border countries, to be able to take at any point apart from the last stages. Sit tight in Australasia every time, and you'll find someone takes North and South America, in either order, and have, combined, only 3 border countries to defend for 7 bonus armies each round - with easy expansion into Africa for 10 armies per round. Meanwhile, they'll know your boring strategy before the game even starts, and, judging by the unoriginal tactics most DUers show, someone else will be trying to take it too, so you'll both be squabbling over a cul-de-sac, and getting no bonus armies, while other people get on with conquering the world, as the game demands.

The weird thing in Risk is the appearance, some time in the past 20 years or so, of 'missions' which allow you to win the game without conquering the world. When did they come in? Spoils the concept of the game, if you ask me.
