Fuck TurboTax, and the rest of 'em...
finally got my other w-2 and blithely went over to the TurboTax e-file site where I filed last year with no problems and no fees.

This year, they don't like Opera and insist I use IE or Firefox.

OK, but then my Flash was outdated and I need to download the new one. (the Opera Flash plugin is new, but the other two had the problem)

OK, but I never got around to dealing with that because I found out the bastids are charging 20 bucks to do the state return this year, and that's about what I get back.

So, on to Plan B, since everyone is charging for the state return this year.

2. I don't have that problem...
very little taxable income this year, and the only reason I'm filing is to get the Earned Income Credit.

First, have you gotten the withholding problem taken care of? If not, ask your employer for a new W4 and fill it out.

Second, file the returns by April 15th even if you can't pay. If you can send something, send it, along with a letter requesting a payment plan. The failure to file penalties on top of what you owe will only compound the problem.

PM me if you want.

7. Form 9465 from the IRS website
Installment Agreement Request

This should go with your Federal return if you can't pay the entire amount due.

4. I don't file the state returns electronically
it's not worth the cost. I download the forms from the state and complete them by hand. Most of them start with adjusted gross income as the starting point and so a lot of the work's already done.

17. Yeah, that's sort of what I'm doing this year..
but New York allows you to e-file, I'm just not paying someone else to do it for me.

16. Use TurboTax ... but only so far.
It's good for playing around with figures and seeing various "what if" scenarios. If you use the online version you only pay when you file (print or efile). They'll tell you how much you'll get back or have a refund for.

Then you can if you like figure it out from there.

There are some free federal filers online - www.esmarttax.com is what I used. You can prepare State and it'll give some figures and guidance too... You can do the feds via them and the State by hand.

Mark.

19. I ain't using them at all, what with...
their pissiness about browsers and Flash this year.

My returns this year are simple enough I can e-file 'em myself and New York has online forms to fill out and file.

Federal and state, $9.95 (last year). Total, not each.
