Is Direct TV a scam or is it pretty good?
Comcast is killing me. ATT is offering me a deal. Do I dare?

Is their DVR worth the extra?
Is HD worth the extra?

Please tell me your horror stories!!

1. I love DirecTV
We just got the HD package and it is awesome. We've had the DVR package for over a year and just love it. I'm sorry I have nothing bad to say about it. Just the Customer Service - they outsource theirs to India or Phillipines. It's God Awful!

2. A scam? What would your definition of scam be?
I have DirecTV. We get the Total Choice Plus package and DVR, and it works beautifully. We also get the NFL Sunday Ticket every year.

4. Thanks folks
I'm VERY worried about the 24 month contract requirement and what the actual expenses will be - the deal seems very complicated with all sorts of conditions and requirements and rebates. It's entirely possible I may not live here for the next 24 months and will get burnt with the very high penalty. There's also not a chance in hell I'm giving them my credit card.

However, once things get more stable it's nice to know the service is reliable (even if the cust serv isn't :) )

5. If there's a chance you'll move (and that's why the 24 month contract bothers you)
you can just leave the dish behind and pick up with it at your next home.

We've had DirectV for almost 10 years and I love it; never had any problems with customer service, either--they must train them exrtremely well to cover their accents (my husband is Indian with a very, very slight accent and his is thicker than anyone I've encountered at directV.

I find their customer service to be very good, fwiw and the technicians who come to your home are top-notch.

7. DISH SI! - DIRECTV NO!
DirecTV will fuck you over every chance they get - they are very hard on customers, management is stupid and hostile.

Dish is good - ours is under $70/month.

10. We have not had that experience AT ALL in 10 years with DirecTV.
We have had DirecTV continuously since October of 1998.

My dad has had it even longer and has no complaints.

8. I love it!

We've had it for 10 years. It more or less came with our house, as the former owner left behind the dish and the receiver and we were allowed to transfer the bill to our name. At first it seemed to be pretty vulnerable to the weather, but for the past 2 years we've had very, very few outages. We've been able to add/delete services online, and can see the changes within 5 minutes. A couple of times our service was cut off because the bill didn't get paid on time (due to changes in debit card and online billing) and the problem was resolved in minutes and the TV was back on.

My only problem with it is the requirement of a landline phone...

On edit: I think we got in before Murdoch took over, and once you buy equipment you're kinda reluctant to change just because the new owner is an asshole when everything else stays the same. My parents have Dish and the loveit, but I just don't find it as user-friendly. YMMV

11. You definitely got in before Murdoch bought it.
He didn't get it until '01 or '02.

I refuse to do autopay, but I pay all my bills online through my bank anyway.

9. We love DirecTV.
We have the DVR.

We do not have an HD TV so we do not get the HD service.

Customer Service has been decent, when we have had to call them.

We have the sports package plus we get MLB Extra Innings so I can watch the Twins here in CA.

16. Hurricane Ivan wiped out our cable for weeks.
That's when I decided to go Dish.

Crews hurry to get electric power back on line, but cable is WAAAYYYY down on the list of 'essential services'.

And we never lost Dish during Katrina.
Do it!
