Satchmo singing "What A Wonderful World"
Just played on "Radio Heartland."

No one else should ever sing that song again. It's his forever.

Comment.

1. Yeah, he sings it from the heart.
He's one of the five books of the Bible when it comes to popular music.

4. I have to tell you something
My friends who are jazz musicians do not like that song, nor do they like the fact that Louis sang it. Although worshipped as a musical genius and the originator of jazz interpretation, Louis is criticized for going "commercial" in the later years of his career, lowering himself to such pap as "Hello Dolly" and other things that were, really, beneath him musically. He was not the simple smiling man that many Americans picture; he was complicated. He was a dope smoker. He had a foul mouth. He was bitter about some things. His career as a horn player began when he was in juvenile custody for having killed a man with a gun. The "Colored Waifs Home" where he was confined had education opportunities, including music lessons. That's where his musical career began.

The song is sweet. It brings comfort to many people. But it makes true, dedicated jazzers grind their teeth.

RIP, Pops.
