SHANGHAI (AFP) - British rock supergroup Oasis said Chinese authorities had banned it from performing in China because guitarist Noel Gallagher played at a Free Tibet benefit concert 12 years ago.

Oasis, led by brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher, said authorities had abruptly ordered organisers to cancel two shows -- April 3 in Beijing and April 5 in Shanghai -- that would have marked their debut in mainland China.

"The Chinese authorities' action in cancelling these shows marks a reversal of their decision regarding the band, which has left both Oasis and the promoters bewildered," the band said in a statement on Monday.

However, Chinese authorities denied the ban was over Tibet, saying it was because of financial problems with the band's local promoters.

Personally I think it's the the fact that the taste for music in China excludes bands like Oasis.

2. STOP CRAPPING ON OASIS!
Damn it, people! I have a copy of "Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants" right here on my desk, and I am going to play it just to be a dick!

With all of the swill in the world (gangsta rap, nu metal, Kid Rock, corporate Nashville, assorted American Idol retreads), why trash a band that at least has the good sense to rip off the Kinks and the Beatles?

5. hmm...
I know you're being snarky, but this isn't something to cheer or laugh about. This is another step by China in its habitual oppression of the inalienable rights belonging to all humans. At this current juncture, China is truly nothing more than a giant slave-labor factory. CCTV captures every minute in public spaces, freedom of press is non-existent, freedom to protest is absent. China is the manifestation of Orwell's greatest nightmare.

7. Celine Dion was a national f'in treasure in China
all five years I was there. I'm not sure it's about musical taste. There are few other places in the world where you can sing "My Heart Will Go On" completely shitfaced and without irony and still face your coworkers the next day.
