Sleazy JP Morgan Chase Won't opt-out my CC account- sleazy tactics
They tried that "it didn't get there in time" bullshit. I sent it out USPS certified mail.

I gave the stupid guy the USPS# and he couldn't find it. There's a FN surprise. I could find it, and it clearly indicates receipt before their bullshit deadline. The Chase asshole wanted me to believe it took 13 days to get from CA to TX. These fuckers claimed it didn't arrive until 5 days after the receipt date on the USPS website. The stupid opt-out letter says "must be received before," it clearly was. Every Chase asshole kept saying they can't do anything about it. Fuck them and their bullshit company. Both cards were set to increase 0.25%, but that's bullshit nonetheless.

I fucking closed both CC accounts anyway, and tomorrow my bank account will have 1 cent left.

1. The postal service said it got there on time? You win.
They loose. If they try shit, sue. Include court costs in damages. You still win, they still lose.

I'm calling those assholes again later to let them have it again.

At least the CCs are closed now. I couldn't get on the website.

I kept telling the stupid idiot "you hear what I said, I said 18th" loud and clear.

F-them. Let's see how long they maintain my 1 cent bank account.

7. They will likely start
adding service fees until you owe them. I've seen that happen. Best to just close the bank account, too.

3. They tried that with me a number of years ago...
They jacked up the rate on my Mastercard, so I opted to refuse the change and close the account. Well, needless to say, the first month thereafter, the rate had been jacked up. I called them, and they said that it takes a month or so for their accounting to get corrected, and it would be fixed probably by the next month. Well, the next month rolled around, and I was still getting charged the higher rate. I decided to give them one more month to correct it, and, when they didn't, I gave them another call. This time, the fun really began"

First, they told me that the opt-out deadline was actually a month earlier than it was. In other words, if the notice gave the deadline as, say, May 21st, they told me the notice had said April 21st. Too bad for them I still had the notice in hand, and was able to read it off to them.

They then put me on hold for awhile, and came back saying that, yes indeed, the deadline was May 21st after all, but that they hadn't received my opt-out letter until May 25th. Too bad for them again that I had not only sent my letter Express Mail, but also with tracking and delivery confirmation -- so, not only could I tell them that it had arrived several days before the deadline, but was able to read off to them the name of the worker who had signed for it, and let them know that I would be happy to fax them the signed receipt, as well as a copy of the initial notice with the proper deadline on it.

After a few more minutes on hold, they came back saying that they had to refer the matter to their accounting department. Sure enough, a couple of weeks later, I got a letter informing me that I had done everything properly, they were resetting the interest rate and allowing me to pay off the balance under the earlier terms, and credited the extra interest I had paid as principal instead.

The moral of the story is that, while credit-card issuers are utterly unscrupulous, even they have to back down when you have the facts in your favor and evidence in hand.

4. These dirtbags must have a list of excuses ready for every possible scenario.
They got some nerve, mouthing off that there was nothing they could do. The two idiots I talked to were on the same level of stupidity. It was like my delivery confirmation didn't exist.

I'm sending a complaint to the CA AG's office.

I opted-out of Crapital One's +10% increase and all it took was an automated phone call. Of course, I'll speak to a live person to verify.

5. If you've closed the accounts and they don't have balances...
... then sure, complain but I'd let it lie after that.

However... if they have balances on them (and definitely if significant ones):

Throw the book at them.

They've breached your contract in essence. You should bill them fees (administrative fees) for your time and efforts in rectifying THEIR mistakes. When the higher APR comes in, dispute the charge, in writing, and cite the Fair Credit Billing Act - even though it probably doesn't apply under this situation.

There is a way to fix various things: just got to know the right way of doing it.

Mark.

6. The balance is about 1k. A 0.25% increase is pretty insignificant on 1k, but locking....
in the fixed rate by opting-out was more important than keeping the account open. Their stupid account changes change fixed rates to variable rates. You know their rates are headed in just one direction.
