Spring has come to Upstate New York - the red winged blackbirds
are back and there's a road kill skunk at the edge of my yard........

all year. Are dead skunks a harbinger of spring in New York?

2. I think they either hibernate in winter here or else they don't try to cross
the roads because they can't climb over the snow banks! But yes, one of our first signs of spring is the scent of road kill skunks!

Maybe the new litters are born now and the older siblings are forced out of their nests?

4. Another sign of Spring: the changing of the cats:
Sapa who is ancient spent the winter snoozing on a towel on top of a floor grate. Missy, who is 8 months, spent the winter snoozing in Sapa's basket on the buffet by the window. Today Missy was outside checking for varmints and Sapa was back at his post.
