The Weekly MLB Spring Training Check-In Thread.
My Phils are doing so-so - they're 4-3 so far. Meh.

How is your team doing?

1. Ugh. Not well.
They lost 10-2 to Detroit (?) yesterday. Worse, on of the pitchers I've heard a lot of talk about has a sore forearm and they aren't quite sure what is going on. That concerns me far more than the actual record. Get well soon, Shaun Hill!

9. Woohoo!
I hold your beloved Twins in high regard, if for no other reason than the fact that they're destroying the Yanks. :woohoo: :hi:

4. Because my Expos are no more, I have (after a couple years)
finally reached the decision to root for the Minnesota Twins, another small-market team that was up for contraction.

They're 4-2 now.

11. I was in on the ground floor with the Expos.
I rooted for them from their very first game until their last. Can't root for them here. I tried, I just couldn't. It's like being head over heels in love for almost four decades and then learning that your wife just got tired of you and started sleeping with every Republican she could find.

I really, really did try. Just couldn't do it.

18. As expected.
The World Baseball Challenge eliminates most of my infield, so that's not going to change.

22. Half of them left for the WBC
World Baseball Classic.

Pedroia and Yoooooook are playing for Team USA, Dice-K is pitching for Japan, Big Papi is playing for the Dominican Republic, and Jason Bay is with the Canadian squad. Those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head. There's probably a minor leaguer or two playing for Italy.

24. Dodgers signed Ramirez.
And lo and behold, turns out we got a bunch of other guys on our local team! And there's some kind of "batting order" that people are now talking about. And we have a suspect "pitching staff", whatever that is...lolzers. And our guys will have to play a bunch of OTHER teams in order to win the West, even though we were led to believe that signing this Manny person would deliver us the championship.

Seriously, though. The Dodgers signed Manny and all of a sudden the floodgates opened and the sports-talk hacks are now talking about everything they should've been talking about for the last couple of months.

I hate, I mean I have pure loathesome hatred, toward this stupid phenomenon of worshiping pro athletes to the tune of millions and millions and millions! of dollars. It is disgusting.

26. Pre-season records mean little
Spring training has two main purposes: To get a look at some kids (all but a couple of whom will be back in Triple-A or Double-A on April 8) and to see how well veterans are doing after injuries. Spring lineups resemble only vaguely the lineups they'll have when they're playin' for keeps.

It's the one time of year when I focus on individual performances, especially the kids'. But that can be misleading, because a kid who's hitting .432 in spring might well be getting his hits off pitchers who are also kids.

Spring training is one big grain of salt. Enjoy it, but don't put too much into it.
