*rant* do NOT take your children to see Watchmen.. morans

:mad: this kind of crap pisses me off. so i just got back from the late showing of Watchmen at our small local theater tonight. i counted AT LEAST 6 kids there that looked under 10.

Watchmen is rated R, and appropriately so. the parents can thank themselves when their kids have nightmares about a guy chopping into a man's skull with an ax, or one of the other gruesome scenes from the movie.

I know that it's just special effects, but it's the idea of it that bothers me so much. I get way to empathic sometimes. I absolutely hate it when I see young kids at violent films. A former friend of mine would take her five and seven year olds to films like that. When they would start crying she would hiss at them "Suck it up! Just suck it up! It's just a movie, dammit"! They'd have nightmares, then she'd get mad at them for having nightmares! What a heartless dumbass she turned into (and yes, she does vote GOP now). :grr:

3. I was taken to violent movies when I was a kid.

But it didnt bother me I actually liked the movies back then. I saw Predator when I was 10 and the first Terminator on video when I was 8. I'm one of the people that violent movies and video games wont necessarily be bad for kids but if the kid is crying during the movie then they shouldnt be in there.


Wanting to enjoy a violent action flick with your kids is one thing but if you are forcing them there against their will then you are a moran.

8. Hell, that stuff still bothers me!!

I won't go see anything too gory or violent. I'm over 50 and I will have nightmares.

Suspense, like Alfred Hitchcock did, was good stuff, because you used your imagination.

However, blood 'n' guts just messes with my head.

I can't look at alligators, snakes, insects, or weird looking fish either (reminded of that because of the thread about a big assed alligator -- I didn't look).

9. I agree about that and about Hitchcock's methods.

Ridley Scott must have been inspired by him as well as others that knew how to create horror with sound alone. I can think of two important scenes in Blade Runner where the violence is taking place off-screen with only the sound of the ones being hurt making it to your senses and imagination :o

i saw a person there with three kids. each ticket costs 6.50. that's 19.50 for three kids. many teenagers around here will babysit kids that late(when they're in bed anyways) for a couple hours for 20 bucks.

13. I saw JAWS when I was 7 years old.

The theater I saw it in was about 100 yards from the Atlantic Ocean. I spent my pretty much whole summers at the beach. That movie fucked me up. I'm still fearful of deep water where you can't see the bottom.

I listened to a lot of British Invasion when I was your age, even though a lot of their early stuff came out before I showed up in 1967. I saw the Kinks and the Animals when i was in my teens. It's weird to see U2, REM, et al, the young college radio bands of that time frame, in the elder statesman role now.

I do question why people bring kids to movies like that, but I tend to think about it through the lens of my own experience as a parent. My kids could not handle that sort of movie at that age (they're both under 12).

That being said, I know kids in my sons' classrooms that are far more mature and probably *are* going to see Watchmen.

Last year, I threw a video game party for my oldest at this video game place in the next town. You can rent out the whole place- there are big screens with game chairs and various game systems.

I asked the teenage guy behind the counter to keep the rating to "E" (everyone). Not 10+ E, but E.

Most of the kids were playing Wii party games involving putting candy on cupcakes within a certain time period(admittedly cheesy, but these were 10 year olds). Some of the other kids got ahold of a game that involved shooting guns at people and kicking the crap out of some woman. I stopped it immediately, but you know what they said (little buggers)? "My mom lets me play this".

:rofl: I don't parent that way, and I simply don't get the gratuitous violence being anywhere near appropriate for that age. But there you go. I believed the kids when they said their mom let play the game. I made them switch games, tho.

love scary movies. And that one, by far, is at the very top of my scary movie list. I was too young to see it, and my parents had no clue that I watched it, but it didn't mess me up.

32. I had the flipside of that happen.

I saw "The Cooler" in the theater a few years ago and was sitting next to a somewhat elderly woman and her middle-aged daughter.

There's a sex scene or two in the movie between William H. Macy and Maria Bello, and after one of them, the camera pans down their naked bodies, though they covered their "naughty bits" with their hands (to avoid an NC-17).

Even with that sanitized image, the elderly woman and her daughter both yelled out, "Gross!" At that point, I was ready to ask them, "How do you think you got here? Magic?"

There were four or five kids there. There was one infant.

I know times are tough...some parents can't afford a babysitter but don't go out then. Just stay home and catch it on Netflix. It's not like it's date night when you bring the kids.

35. My daughter got bitched at by several customers today over Watchmen

She works at a movie theater and had to deal with one dad that had his own kid with him..no big deal, it was HIS kid..but he brought with him a GROUP of kids all under 17.
She couldn't let the other kids in..per the policy, a kid under 17 has to have their legal guardian to see the film. NOT their best friend's legal guardian, not Mr John Doe from down the street..THEIR OWN legal guardian. If the guardian of those other kids wanted their kids to see the movie, they have to come up to the movie theater and accompany them in to see it.
My daughter was met with a "I wanna talk to the MANAGER..NOW". Okey-dokey...gladly. Then everyone gets to watch the manager tell you the same exact thing that the cashier (my daughter) just told you.
Another couple tried to pull a fast one...the definiton of "legal guardian" is that they have to be over 25. So this young couple comes and my daughter notices that while the girl came and bought the ticket, the guy kinda hovered WAAAYYY behind her. As in "don't stand too close to the cashier, maybe she won't notice you". Basically, it was a case of a less than 17 year old trying to get in with a less than 25 year old and they were trying to hide it.
Daughter is taking all the bitching well since she knows the manager who she calls over will be backing her 300%.
The theater has several layers of "age/ID checkers" so even if the kids happen to get by one worker, they get stopped by the next.

Amazing how grown adults will turn so hostile/juvenile over a fucking movie.
