I am no longer going to use the word "Yuppie."

Even though I am bourgeois myself - I have been a critic of bland consumerist ideology - and have frequently used the word "Yuppie" to describe my contempt for this ideology - all be it hypocritically.

I frequently write about concepts like "green" cars and other "green" consumer stuff and I have used this word a lot.

The word "Yuppie" was coined to describe a certain consumerist type in the 1980's Young Upwardly-Mobile Professional.

The term is an anachronism.

I am very disappointed with my generation - and to be clear, myself - for not caring enough when we should have cared, and maybe could have cared, but it is what it is.

We are not "young" anymore, and many of us - most of us - are not upwardly mobile any more.

But there is an older word - a better word - that fits the class: "Bourgeois."

I am "Bourgeois." I am no longer a "Yuppie."

A better word, I think.
