The strangest comment I've ever heard from another musician
As some of you know, I'm in this new band. They have their pro's and con's like any other band and I'm generally happy just to be playing again - rocking faces with my mancannon. But last night, after a quick practice to get us geared up for a big show Thursday in Baltimore, the bass player said this:

"I don't think any band should play for more than a half hour because then you just bore the audience."

I was in shock. Who the fuck says that? What if The Grateful Dead or The Police or The Stones or any other great live band only played for a half hour to a booked house? There'd be blood on the streets and rightfully so. I understand wanting to keep your cards close to you but only playing for a half hour seems to me like some real battle of the bands type of horseshit.

I don't know if I can get over someone having that kind of attitude.

1. Thats complete bullshit
My stepdad used to play the drums in a rock band and I saw many of his concerts. I can tell you I NEVER saw people get bored after a half and hour.
And in the case of the famous bands that have SOOO much great work..you are right a 30 minute show only a few things would get covered.
What a weird attitude for a musician to have. I'm guessing thats his personal feelings and he's projecting....

2. Pretty fucking weird
I don't want to plot against the guy. He's alright. But I really am in shock. A night of sleep hasn't made it better. I called the leadsinger and told her we need to keep this project from derailing if his attitude persists.

She's really hot.

6. More 60s Soul than anything.
Really fucking loud. Some Reggae thrown in here and there, but I get the feeling the rest of the bands doesn't 'get' how to play Jamaican rhythyms. Eventually, I'd like to introduce more 60's Ska and early 70's Reggae into the mix, but I don't think they're quite ready for it.

8. Wow!
That's a really nice mix. I could listen to that all night long! :)

In any event, the comment made by your bandmate is horseshit. I've never heard of such a thing.

10. Sounds like he has a case of nerves.
I have seen and heard people do crazy stuff right before a gig. My ex used to throw up EVERY time and then went out and Killed 'em. He was hell to live with for the few days leading up to the Big Day.

The last gig my band played, our first set went 1:10 before we took a break, then we got back up for about another hour on the second. The loved us.

13. He's a BASS player, for god's sake!
Maybe HE is the one getting bored after half an hour. Sounds like he's not into the whole scene. Or maybe he needs to be FUCKING STABBED BY A NARWAL MOTHERFUCK!!1

Just a thought.

15. Iggy Pop and New Order are/were notorious for their short sets
Neither one of them would play much beyond 40 minutes. Each had their reasons-- Iggy mainly because he is a very physical performer and can only keep it up for that long, and New Order because... well, they're New Order.

When I'm playing a set, I like to play as long as possible, even if it wears me out (I do double duty as a guitarist/vocalist in a three-piece, so it can be a challenge sometimes). But if the dude is a non-singing bass player in a band that's bigger than four pieces, what's the problem?

16. Maybe he's been in some really crappy bands.
Some of the best bands I've seen take a few songs until they hit their stride.
