My PowerMac died, all hail my new (previous generation) Mac Pro!
My old PowerMac died over the weekend, probably power supply related, and it will be getting repaired, but I was already considering a new machine and this sealed the deal. I couldn't live without it considering my photography, and the simple fact that I can't use my work laptop for all but the most innocuous uses (use your imagination).

So far, I'm loving it. It's running far cooler and quieter than my PowerMac, now all I need to do is install a second hard drive, and the two from my old machine.

1. man, I'm jealous. :(
I'm looking for a used G5. Can't afford a new mac pro.

Have fun and know that I'm insanely jealous!

2. I've been saving for the new machine anyway, I wasn't quite there yet
but without a machine to use I was dead in the water.

Don't be jealous, i need to restore everything now! Yes, Time Machine will help, as will having the old hard drives moved over (not done yet)

5. Sure can, it will run on any G5 with 512Mb of RAM
I was using a "Late 2005" G5, dual-core 2.3Ghz machine and it ran just fine.

6. ahhh, okay, that's why I'm upgrading. I have an old single processor 1.8
I don't think that 10.5 would be very friendly with my single system. I need some speed.

I've topped it out. Can't find an old ATI card for it. Not made anymore. So it's off to, I'm hoping, dual quad. Saw one on craiglist for 1300.

I know I know, if I can shell out 1300, why not just put it down on a new one?

don't want the debt right now.

I was hoping for apple to come out with a lower end version of the Mac Pro. something in the 1500-1800 range.

7. Had Apple introduced something like that, I would have gone for it
Mine was a new machine, bought at a decent price, and I can get a full three years of Applecare on it. Had a refurb been available from the Apple store, I wouldn't have hesitated.

Like you, I waited too long to upgrade to the better ATI card, and couldn't find it either.

Mine also has the woefully underpowered ATI Radeon HD 2600 card. I'm not a gamer, but want something a bit beefier for Aperture, so when it's available, I'll be going for the 4870.

9. Yeah, I need a card for graphics.
I have been putting together an animation for the past two months and the rendering time is killing me. I could go on vacation for weeks before this thing is finished rendering. Even doing it in small parts.

I have to bite the bullet, I just hope my wife will go along with it. LOL

8. How long have you had yours for?
Mine is all of five hours old and I'm already impressed with it.

I've already installed SuperDuper, transferred the system to a one terabyte drive, installed my old two-drive RAID from the power-addled PowerMac and am currently using the migration utility to move all of my data over.

10. I don't have a 1TB drive. I have the 300 Gig
I've had mine for... I forget how long. But it's over a month old. And what the hell is SuperDuper?

13. Leopard's Time Machine works pretty well. But some of us like having multiple backups

14. Multiple backups are critical!
Having said that, my only backup was Time Machine, thankfully after installing my two drive RAID into the Mac Pro it was live with all of my data intact.

With big drives being so inexpensive these days, I'll be grabbing a few more and creating bootable copies of my main drive and keeping them completely disconnected from everything.
