there's a TON of backstory that you've missed (like 4 or 5 seasons)... watch a couple this time, and if you like what you see, rent the first few seasons to catch up--the first is the best by a long shot. I'm sure there's a fansite online with episode summaries and stuff to help you get your bearings if you don't want to take the time to watch 60 back episodes!
It isn't nearly as good these days. That is true of most strong shows though. Renting the early ones will help you follow what is going on now... because like any long-running drama, the plots get convoluted and intertwined.
I'll see how it is tonight and whether I want to invest the time in catching up. I may just decide to let this one go.... Can you believe I never watched Friends? Or Seinfeld? They didn't click with me.
