Fans and haters of jam bands (the Dead, Phish, etc.) - check out this discussion

One of my favorite radio show's is WNYC's "Soundcheck". Yesterday's show was about jam bands, with one guy who really loves 'em, and one guy who really hates them, plus some call in people.

The guy who hates them really, really hates them, and has some wonderfully descriptive and artistic language to describe them.

The guy who likes them also makes a good defense.

And John Schaeffer, the host, is a wonderful debate moderator.

Really, really good smackdown. It's about 30 minutes long.

I'll add my two cents here: I like jam bands, at least in theory. There are some that I wasn't so keen on (moe seems like it was one of them), but I LOVE music that's improvised, with long solos and long songs. I love the exploration, the journey, the sheer in-the-moment-ness of it. Jazz improv, rock improv, blues improv, doesn't matter. I just fucking love it. Allman Brothers taking a song to 25 minutes? Fuck yeah!!
