How much do movers cost?
Say, for a 2-bed apartment's worth of crap, moving to the town next door. $1500?

7. Are DUers gonna help you move?
If so, all you'll need is free pizza and beer

2. Hmmmm....two guys with a truck could do it in 10 hours max let's say...
Edited on Wed Mar-11-09 11:13 PM by LeftyFingerPop
2 men x 10 hours x a ridiculous $60/hour = $1,200.

My assumptions are high, so I would say $1,500 is high.

Try to find some insured guys who do this and not a big moving company.

3. 15 years ago, it cost me $400.
Same situation. $1500 sounds pretty high to me, but region, etc varies the price.

4. The company I used to work for
Edited on Wed Mar-11-09 11:20 PM by quakerboy
did it for 25/hr per worker and .57 per mile. Then it got bought and went up to 35/hr and 1.57 per mile.

A few questions:
Will you pack, or will your mover do it?
How far is the next town over?
Whats the furniture involved?

6. Thanks all!
I'm running the numbers, late at night, as to whether or not we can afford to buy a house this year. I had planned on borrowing 50% of my 401k (what's left of it, it's now all in a "stable asset fund" which is actually up 0.5% this year, instead of down >20% like the other funds in the plan)...but due to vesting and Safe Harbor provisions can only borrow 22% of it, which means we have less cash on hand than I had planned out in my head.

However, after crunching numbers - I think we might just make it! That means our little boys will get some room to roam and a swingset to play on. Oh, and a vastly better school system than the one in the town we rent in.

8. If you run a Craigslist ad for help

at $10/hour you may get hundreds of responses. Maybe the whole move could be 150? But dealing with all the hassles may not be worth it.

9. Do you live in, or near, a college town?
If you post a note on the prominent bulletin board you can find some (strong) young fellers that would be willing to be paid UT (under the table).

10. Everyone's advice is right on
I just moved about 65 miles, a very full 2 bedroom house which filled two nice sized trucks. It cost about $1,800 for the movers and mileage. This does not include the meals and snacks. The guys worked like dogs and were worth every penny. See if any friends can recommend a firm. Mine gave free estimates.
Good luck on your new adventure!:toast:

13. I paid $1250, two years ago.
Two movers and a supervisor (the owner of the company, who also worked with the movers).

Approximate eight-hour job. The secret is to have everything packed and clearly labeled. If they have to slow down and ask "Where does this go" the hours add up, and so does the bill. Also, any small stuff you can move yourself (or with the aid of friends) is that much less for the paid movers to deal with.

There are cheaper ways of doing it, but it all comes down to your comfort level of who you're willing to let into your home (as well as what level of insurance they have). I went with an accredited company and paid accordingly.

14. I'd use a company or load and drive yourself
Edited on Thu Mar-12-09 08:05 AM by lizziegrace
I haven't asked friends to help in years - I'm afraid someone will hurt themselves and I've seen too many weekend warriors end up with chronic back problems.

If you hire a company, ask to see their worker's comp certificate. Protects you and you know the worker will should be taken care of if injured.

18. We used a rented truck and hired temp laborers for $6 or $8 per hour
you just have to stage the stuff well so it will take less time or they will be standing around doing nothing (we were NOT organized) but they did move all the heavy stuff my husband couldn't move alone or with just a woman or two.
