I'm watching "Taking Chance" on HBO right now. The tears...

I've only been watching for about 10 minutes, but this is wonderful, and sad, and heart-warming all at the same time.

I missed the beginning. Why did Kevin Bacon's character volunteer to take PFC Chance home?
