1. I don't do it to make me look good.
I do it to make them see their foolishness.
It usually doesn't work.

2. In any case, it usually backfires.
There is someone I do volunteer work with that does the reply all thing, and it drives the rest of us nuts.

3. Someone in my bunco group does that. Drives me crazy.
The only time I do it is for work and if I'm RSVPing for an event.

7. Guess I don't understand the context.
I do it to right wing BS I get when they're too dumb to send it BCC.
I've 'replied all' to people who never heard of me and who I'll never hear from.
But I do get a certain satisfaction from bursting their balloons.

8. oh, actually that is a FINE use of the reply all feature.
Debunk their shit and send it to everyone in their email list.

I love it.

14. Yup. Snopes rocks.
The only time I use "reply all" is when someone forwards me an easily debunked piece of Internet stupidity.

As for all of those chain e-mails: the moment I see "forward on to at least x__ people", it goes in the trash, no matter how clever it is. And the vast majority don't even begin to approach clever.

15. Chain letter emails
My cousin's wife sends them to me with alarming regularity. It always says to be sure to send it on to at least, oh, let's say ten people or else I'll be cursed.

I always send it back to her.

She's never said anything about this to me.

She keeps sending them.

Am I cursed, do you think?

17. I love it when someone replies back to 'ALL' that you shouldn't use reply all
when responding to an email.

Sometimes that can really break the boredom of a day.

4. I'm trying to master the "reply all" function
It seems it works pretty well to keep "all" informed. I push the concept.

What gets me is when higher-ups break the chain and tell 3-4 people the same thing differently enough to toss a wrench into any successful planning.

:hi:

5. If you are working on a project and need to keep everyone informed
it is a GREAT tool.

If you only need to respond to the sender, but hit reply all so everyone else can see "how great" you are, it makes you look like a douchebag.

One of the people I volunteer with does the second thing, and she totally comes off to everyone else as a real douchebag.

9. I have the opposite problem at work.
When there is an email that goes out with an issue that bears input from everyone on the list, most of the people there are computer illiterate and they insist on just replying the the sender so everyone else is now out of the loop all of a sudden.

11. I use it all the time to blast back documents to everyone in a group.
I'm fond of the shotgun email method of documents. That way I can say with self confidence that 'I sent you the specs in an email. Look it up,' and not have to explain it myself.

12. I use it when someone sends one of those emails that's an urban legend
Edited on Fri Mar-13-09 09:23 PM by Kat45
Often it will be the fifth time I've seen the stupid thing, so I hit 'reply all' to blast back an "urban legend" reply with the appropriate Snopes link.

13. I never reply to all. Usually "all" couldn't give a shit about what
I have to say.

18. I like "reply all"
I've dealt with a few people at work who like sending emails to every higher up they can name that aren't exactly true and I find using reply all helps reduce that problem.

One person in particular I deal with in another business unit use to be really good at sending me a private email admitting she's been swamped at work. Then she'd request I resend her information but send a mass email minutes later innocently asking why an assignment, which everybody knows I handle, was never done and emphasizing the importance of it. That's when I'd have to forward the original email (with read receipt), fax (with confirmation page), etc to everybody. I sympathize with anybody who is overworked and stressed but don't put my job at risk because of it.

Of course reply all is always good to debunk rightwing/urban legend emails. I don't get many of those anymore :D.

20. I learned that one early on. Its gotten to the point where sometimes when I mean to hit reply to all
I'll hit just reply out of habit, and I won't notice until I'm done typing the email. So I gotta copy and paste it onto a 'reply to all' email. :P
