Post some non-political info that you find interesting
My info focuses on the weather forecasting models.

The main weather models include the:

GFS (Global Forecast System - long range American model; goes out to 16 days)
NAM (North American Mesoscale Model - short range American model; goes out to 84 hours)
ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts - European model; goes out to 10 days)
GGEM (Canadian weather model; goes out to 144 hours - the RGEM is a short term Canadian model)
UKMET (Model based in the UK; goes out to 72 hours)

There are other models such as the JMA (Japan model,) RUC (short-term American model,) and the NOGAPS (run by the Navy.)

3. The diverse wildlife of North America that people don't know about.
I find that interesting.

for instance, the venus fly-trap, found only in North America:

There are also two species of boa constrictor naturally occurring in the United States, the rubber boa and the rosy boa:

Rosy Boa

6. BTW, I posted in another thread that the Euro had a St. Patty's day mid-Atlantic snowstorm
Edited on Fri Mar-13-09 10:25 PM by mvd
It has waffled since then - sometimes showing snow, sometimes little, sometimes mostly rain. Any storm now would be after St. Patty's day. Models waffle in the long range, but inside 4 days, the Euro is often excellent.

The weather reports you hear in the U.S. take a blend of all the models, but not surprisingly lean a bit towards the American ones like the GFS and NAM.

This gentleman. Cool.

Mom and I were talking about Lincoln's watch and she mentioned it. I should really just start indulging my genealogy obsession and be done with it.... this is soooo coool.

8. Film nerdery...
Werner Herzog once promised to eat his shoe if Errol Morris completed the movie project on pet cemeteries that he had been working on, in order to challenge and motivate Morris, whom Herzog perceived as incapable of following up on the projects he conceived. In 1978 when the film Gates of Heaven premiered, Werner Herzog cooked and publicly ate his shoe, an event later incorporated into a short documentary Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe by Les Blank. At the public shoe-eating, Herzog suggested that he hoped the act would serve to encourage anyone having difficulty bringing a project to fruition.

10. There is time every year when it is the same time in Florida as it is in Oregon.
Since SE Oregon is in the Mountain time zone and NW Florida is in the Central time zone, they are only one hour apart. When Daylight Savings Time ends in the fall and clocks are turned back one hour in Florida, it is the same time as it is in Oregon until they turn their clocks back at 2:00 am.
