4. My first dog was a minature poodle who LOVED me, but LOATHED my dad
and was smart enough to pee on virtually every "dad-smelling" item my dad left around the house: shoes (check), newspaper (check), favorite chair (check), dad's corner of the sofa (check).

I protest! They are brilliant! We have to spell in front of them and now they even know what P-L-A-Y spells. Plus they are mind-readers. They anticipate what we are going to do before we have made a move.

11. shelter dogs are #1 -- mine's a boy scout with a science project
Lab-chow-heinz57. Working on his bone collection merit badge. And simultaneously assembling a deer skeleton by the front door.

He used to seem a bit linguistically impaired, but one day it all seemed to click. He thinks and listens in sentences, though, not individual words. So if I say "get down!' he'll just get confused or stubborn, or confused and stubborn. But if I nicely say, "Jakey, I need to you get down off the bed for a minute so I can make it" he jumps right down and hangs out on the couch until the bed is made. He doesn't get back on it, either, until I let him know it's all made and ready.

Not only does he usually put his toys away, but he *remembers* where he's put them. Often I'll wake up in the middle of the night and see him sitting n'thinking with his head cocked. Then he jumps up, goes to his crate and knows *exactly* which corner to dig into to find which precise toy or chewie he wants.

He gets very irritable when mom cleans his crate. I try to remember how he arranged his stuff, but I never get it quite right.

20. My favorite by far
The dogs I've had so far have been foundlings, but if and when the time comes when I'd choose a dog, it would be a Shepherd. The one I have now is part Lab and Shepherd, which isn't a bad combo at all. She's big and has the fur and conformation of a Shepherd, but she's all black and her ears don't really stand up unless she's on alert.

That one in the picture is a real beauty. That's a great photo.

17. border collie 1 ?
no question.

And shepperd 3 is a good call.

I have two of them..trust me they are smart enough to get themselves in more trouble than they want.

I question why the jack/parson russel isn't there close to the top.

My little rat terrior AND the jack-shiyt pups all learned scratch at the door on the first try and ALL self housetrained following the shepperds

22. I disagree. I think Golden Retrievers are smarter than Poodles.
Edited on Tue Mar-17-09 11:25 AM by Lyric
I've never met a more intelligent dog than my own Golden; he practically speaks English. I can believe that Border Collies might be smarter, but I grew up living next door to two Standard Poodles, and while they were smart, they were nowhere NEAR as smart as my Toby is.

I think the list should be:

1. Border Collies
2. German Shepherds
3. Golden Retrievers

39. We have to spell around Toby...
He understands so much of what we say that if we're even idly talking about something that he knows, he'll get all super-excited and dancy about it. He also remembers where things were last, so we can tell him things like 'go find your brush' or 'go get your bone', and he'll go and hunt it up, even if it's out of sight on a shelf or under the edge of the couch.

Love this dog... he's as smart as most of the kids in the neighborhood.

25. I have a mutt of mostly unknown origins.
I'm not going to say she's one of the most intelligent dogs out there, but she's doing pretty well. She's smart enough to know when to play dumb. She's very good at anticipating what I am going to do. Certain words I had to start spelling, and even some of those words I had to choose another word altogether (ie, for the work "walk", she eventually learned that "W-A-L-K" means walk, and now I have to say "stroll." I think she is catching on to that one now, too.) I swear she pees on command. There were way too many times this past winter when I would say, "Hurry up and pee, it's freezing out here!" and she would immediately squat and pee. :D

I guess if you are going to pick a "smartest breed", Border Collie is a good choice!!

My Border Collies are brilliant, part of that is they have a mind of their own, unfortunately.

One Border Collie is bad enough, but when they put their brains together, humans are screwed.
