The decade in music: post a list of artists from the 2000s that you love
The music artists you list should have started out in the 2000s.

Here's a solid but definitely not complete list:

Kelly Clarkson, New Pornographers, A Fine Frenzy, The Decemberists, The Veronicas, Michelle Branch, Kate Voegele, Josh Ritter, new band Tinted Windows (I can tell from the first single that they will be great), Jessica Harp, Francisca London, The Like, Brandi Carlile, Hey Monday, Karmina, The Love Willows, Avril Lavigne, Pink, The Weepies, She & Him & M. Ward, Nicole Atkins, Molly Jenson, Tracy Lyons, Gaslight Anthem, The Hold Steady, The Pierces, Aly & AJ, Sugarland, Taylor Swift, Tilly & The Wall, Rilo Kiley, Priscilla Ahn, Amy Winehouse, TV on the Radio, Stacie Rose, Margot & The Nuclear So and So's, Leona Naess, Leslie Mills, Vanessa Carlton, The Shins, The Dollyrots, Damone, Youth Group, The Fratellis, Lavender Diamond, Coldplay, The Clientele, Camera Obscura, Joshua Radin, Bonnie McKee, Hem, Eisley, Alexz Johnson, Anna Nalick, Regina Spektor, Kasey Chambers, The Killers, Stars, The Faders, Fisher, Little Big Town, The Wreckers, Butch Walker, Lykke Li, Melinda Doolittle, All Girl Summer Fun Band, Marie Digby, Cara Luft, Sara Bareilles, etc.

Against Me!, White Stripes, The Essex Green, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Thea Gilmore, James McMurtry, Cindy Alexander are some artists who just missed the cutoff date.

I will have to hear more from Katy Perry first. The two Katy-written songs on Kelly Clarkson's excellent All I Ever Wanted are better than most of the songs on Katy's One Of The Boys, which is a good but not exceptional pop/rock CD. Katy's song "I Think I'm Ready" also shows a lot of potential.

Edited on Sun Mar-15-09 11:00 PM by mvd
First Corrs album was in the mid-90s
Kay and Nina have 00s solo work, but they have been around a while.

Though I missed Nick's usual guitar antics. Noticeable New Order influence throughout the album.

12. I haven't really liked much of the music this decade unfortunately
And that's surprising because I loved many of the artists in the 1990s.

Out of your list
Kelly Clarkson
The Veronicas
Michelle Branch
Pink
Coldplay

And a few others I can think of
Five for Fighting
Batasha Bedingfield
Daniel Powter

25. It's pretty good.
My sister bought it for me because I'm a big Tori Amos fan, and Spektor has the same type of "quirky female singer with a piano" way about her that Tori does, although Spektor's a little more low key.

But "Us" is an A+ song, no doubt.

I worked in a music store from 2000-04 and if there was any good new music i wasn't aware of it...

The only CD's I find myself buying (yes i still go out and buy them-*gasp* the horror) are from groups that started in the 70's 80's or 90's...

31. That's cool & I appreciate your opinion...
I'm sure it just has to do with preferences... the music styles of this decade i just don't appreciate. Emo, (ugh I can't even stand that industry-driven phrase), Rap, Bubblegum (Hannah Montana, Jonas brothers, AI) are mostly filled with empty-headed, vacuous "artists" who's only talent is looking good in front of a camera or how much cross-marketing merchandise they can sell. There's no soul in any of it.

I guess being forced by my store to listen to Ashlee Simpson's first cd on a never-ending loop for 2 weeks before it released can produce some bitterness. :grr:

33. I don't find some of that bubblegum to be bad
Jordan McCoy, Brie Larson, some Britney songs, and the second Jonas Brothers CD are fun - and not as content free as you say IMO. To each his own..

I do agree that Ashlee Simpson is mediocre, though.

41. I agree...bubblegum doesn't necessarily mean bad
I was in middle/high school when the last wave of bubblegum pop started (Britney, Christina, Nysnc,) and I loved it. I haven't heard much of the Jonas Brothers' music but their songs just aren't as good as the previous boybands. The Backstreet Boys, for example, actually had at least one really good song (I Want it that way). The Jonas Brothers seem more restricted to the tween/teen market while the previous teens stars had more mainstream appeal. For example, I bet most people can't name a Jonas Brothers song but can name at least one Britney/Christina/BSB song. As far as Britney, I wouldn't consider her bubblegum pop anymore...her first 2 CDs (and maybe her third a little) were though.

I really, really didn't like Ashlee Simpson. She is mediocre and only got a record contract because of her reality show star sister. I don't see much of a future for her in music which probably why she went back to acting on the new Melrose Place.

Edited on Mon Mar-16-09 05:57 PM by mvd
BSB and N'Sync are boring singing machines IMO. BSB do have some singing talent, but the material is lacking. They also seem very female-oriented to me.

Jonas Brothers have a bigger audience for power pop lovers like me.

Britney's music now is kind of a bubblegum version of Madonna's new stuff - less bubblegum than before, though.

45. I was never really fan of Nsynce or BSB
I just liked some of their songs. Pretty much all boybands are female-oriented. Jonas Brothers are a little too clean-cut for me. I've heard a few of their early songs, which were cover songs, and they changed lyrics that weren't even controversial. Their whole "pure" image is a little off-putting for me.

The new album is where they have grown on me with some nicely catchy music. I'm not saying their audience is mostly male, but as a fan of Cheap Trick, the sound appeals to me more.

As long as bands keep putting out quality albums, I'll buy them and listen to them. If they jump the shark, like say Aerosmith and record a puke-tastic love song and do Pepsi commercials, then I wont.

47. Yeah, she does try to be punk-rockish
but she's just as pop as the people she tries to distance herself from (Britney/Christina). I liked Let Go too. My favorite song from that CD is "I'm With You" and "Mobile" is probably a close second. She's done some pretty good stuff since her first CD. I love "My Happy Ending"...probably my favorite of her songs. Her last CD was disappointing. Other than Girlfriend, which is so catchy, there's weren't many great songs.

The third just didn't work as well. "When You're Gone" was ok. The third single "Hot" wasn't very good. Hopefully her next CD is better. According to wiki, Max Martin is working on her 4th CD so I'm already excited to hear some new music from her.

58. Another one you might want to try, bif, is Mirah
The new album is called (A)spera

The upcoming Metric CD is also strong.

A couple disappointments: the new Decemberists CD and Marianne Faithfull's new one. Marianne just can't sing anymore, and the Decemberists are leaning on the prog-rock side too heavily on Hazards Of Love.

I'll keep trying though.

62. A slew of bands (mostly European) not really on the radar here.
I hope to keep it that way.

Scar Symmetry
Mnemic
Initech mentioned Opeth above, and even though they started in the 90s, they've been making consistently good music in this decade as well
I'll throw Meshuggah in there with the same excuse
And Cynic, because they didn't release anything between their debut in 1993 and last year, but the new album is pretty awesome
Rise Against technically started in 1999, but I'll let that slide since they didn't release anything until 2000
Eluveitie
Disarmonia Mundi
Dethklok
Blood Stain Child

63. hmm, hard to find any...truth be told
just looking at the bands on wiki, when they were formed, there are some bands I figured that were in the current decade, but fell short by a year or two(end of 90's)...

But here I go, on a gold mining search....

1. Velvet Revolver

2. Wolfmother

3. Airbourne

4. Five Finger Death Punch(Way of the Fist...I love this cd)

5. Demon Hunter

6. Kelly Clarkson

7. Senses Fail

8. Tokio Hotel

9. Silversun Pickups

10. Hinder

Damn, it took me a while to make a top ten....thats about all my foggy mind can recall at the moment. The current decade of music, in my view has been rather weak, for new bands...unless you like/are a fan of pop, rap...if you love those two genre's you are about in heaven.

I still like 60's-90's music more, from the 60's to present, the past decade has been the weakest for new music/bands....

69. Hi, petersond!
The 70s and earlier might have had more good music, or at least more great music - but despite the 80s having a lot of faves, I think I like this decade more overall than the 80s and 90s. In the 80s, too much music was happy considering Reagan was President! :hi:

I think I have some of their songs on DVD around here somewhere. Haven't listened to them in years.
