In Memoriam, Mary Murphy
Twelve years ago we moved to this old house in the Boston area.

This house, built in 1880, has had many owners before us, but neighbors still refer to it as Mary Murphy's house.

We did not buy this house from the Murphy's; there were at least two other families who lived here in between, for close to two decades after Mary, and before us.

We don't know much about Mary except that she moved in as a newlywed bride, lived here from that day forward, raised a family, and she died in this house.

Last week, I underwent a surgical procedure in Carney Hospital in Dorchester.

As I was wheeled into the O.R., I glanced up at the wall and saw a small poster with the picture of a young woman in a nurse's uniform. It read:

In Memoriam, Mary Murphy.

Just before dozing off, I asked who she was, and the nurse anesthetist said:

Oh, that's Mary Murphy. She was your surgeon's assistant for over twenty years. She died a long time ago. Somebody put that poster up a while back, we don't know who...

And then the anesthesia hit, and I was out like a light.

6. My dear Xipe Totec!
Talk about full circle...

Living in what was her house, having surgery where she used to work...

What a beautiful story!

Her spirit is surely smiling down over you now...

I made a Guinness chocolate cake tonight. Sort of felt guilty using Guinness that way, but it was yummy. :9

16. Great story!
I hope the nurse is the same Mary Murphy who lived in your house. However, that is a common name. Can you check out whether the two Mary Murphys are the same person? If it is, you might want to honor her with flowers on her grave or a little ceremony of thanks in your backyard.

I hope you're recovering well.
