1. I think I saw that in the menu at a Chinese restaurant once
But it was in the "hot and spicy" section so I didn't try it. :P

7. I wouldn't worry about it too much.
I've seen my husband's frat brothers post stuff like that to be silly. It might not mean the person really think's the phrase is spelled that way. We're talking Facebook, not a letter to the editor.

9. i know that. which is why i dont think grammar and punctuation are the biggest deal on facebook
but that is beyond a normal laziness. unlike text message FB doesnt charge you, if you exceed characters

8. It's a VERY irritating trend....
It's funny and cute with a LOLcat, but otherwise.... not so much.

10. I've been getting a lot more IM speak in e-mails from students, but I'm guessing
that your example is genuine illiteracy. :(

I don't mind language-evolution, neologisms, and informality, but even if you set aside the question of 'correct' English (always a minefield) it seems clear that many of our fellow citizens are losing the ability to communicate clearly (let alone eloquently), even on simple topics...

12. Was this person British?
I noticed the "wot" in place of "what" thing a lot in Britain when I'd read any sort of internet commentary. Not that Americans don't have plenty of stupid illiterate netspeak neologisms too, but "wot" seemed to be a very British one in particular.

Agreed, very grating and annoying.

14. I must admit...
Edited on Wed Mar-18-09 05:20 AM by T_i_B
...that I have a few Facebook friends like that. Some are trying to talk Yorkshire, others are just doing girly textspeak.

Oh, and there's another who's just a drunkard and talks like that in real life.

... that's not the reason she's my ex, but it certainly didn't hurt. :P
