Edited on Tue Mar-17-09 01:35 PM by WildEyedLiberal
That's extremely sad.

FTR, I have quite a bit of Scottish ancestry, too, of which I am also proud. The Orangemen unionists have nothing to do with the Scots - they are pro-British imperial oppression.

29. I don't think anyone is hating on Scots or anything like that
There is a lot of anger and resentment about the Orangemen, which I share. Asking someone of Irish background not to resent the Orangemen is like asking black people to not be angry at the KKK. But like I said, the Orangemen != Scottish people. They are just rabid loyalist oppressors.

I think the vast majority of people want peace, but I don't think there will be peace until Ireland is one unified nation again, because without justice, there can be no peace, and colonial partitioning of a land can never be just. There is a place in Ireland for Catholics and Protestants (and pagans, and atheists, and etc) alike, but I don't think there is a place for British imperialism. That is what the anger is about.

46. Well I'm not Irish in the Irihs sense...
Edited on Tue Mar-17-09 04:33 PM by Drunken Irishman
My mom's mom was 100% Irish, her dad was 50% Irish, while my dad's dad was 100% Irish and his mom, well I think she was Italian and Irish, as she grew up in an Irish neighborhood in Chicago. Her last name was Moretti, which is Italian, but her mother was an O'Shay.

So that makes me pretty Irish-American. ;)

Edited on Tue Mar-17-09 05:41 PM by MedleyMisty
and were among the "First Families of Tennessee".

They had a really cool coat of arms.

Hmm - I looked it up and apparently the people who came over in the 1700s were fairly well off. Plus, the coat of arms. And I think at the family reunion I saw documents showing that some had been in Congress.

Okay, who pissed away the family fortune and forced me to work for a living?

OMG, I just combined my mother's maiden name with the Irish name and the fifth search result was my grandmother's obituary.

Overall I'm mostly Irish and English with a hint of Native American - my maternal grandfather had Sioux ancestors and my mother recently said that the genealogy people in the family had also found Cherokee ancestors.
