Whiskey in the Jar - Thin Lizzy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TehFZ38kt6o

As I was going over the Cork and Kerry mountains
I saw Captain Farrell and his money he was counting
I first produced my pistol and then produced my rapier
I said "stand and deliver or the devil he may take you"

I took all of his money and it was a pretty penny
I took all of his money, yeah, and I brought it home to Molly
She swore that she loved me, no, never would she leave me
But the devil take that woman, yeah, for you know she tricked me easy

In the rain, you might do, you might die, yeah-yeah
Whack for my daddy-o
Whack for my daddy-o
There's whiskey in the jar-o

Being drunk and weary I went to Molly's chamber
Taking Molly with me, but I never knew the danger
For about six or maybe seven, yeah, in walked Captain Farrell
I jumped up, fired my pistols, and I shot him with both barrels, yeah

In the rain, you might do, you might die, yeah-yeah
Whack for my daddy-o
Whack for my daddy-o
There's whiskey in the jar-o

Now some men like the fishing and some men like the fowling
And some men like to hear, to hear the cannonball a-roaring
Me I like sleeping, especially in my Molly's chamber
But here I am in prison, here I am with a ball and chain, yeah

In the rain, you might do, you might die, yeah-yeah
Whack for my daddy-o
Whack for my daddy-o
There's whiskey in the jar-o, yeah

Whiskey in the jar-o, yeah

In the rain, you might do, you might die
In the rain, you might do, you might die, hey
In the rain, you might do, you might die
In the rain, you might do, you might die, yeah

1. Even though I know it's a remake,
I prefer the Metallica version.

3. Seeing how the Metallica song is a direct
copy of the Thin Lizzy version I don't know how I can complain about your tastes either.

:)

4. Thin Lizzy's is a cover version, too. They didn't write it.
"Whiskey..." is actually an Irish folk song. One thing that bugged Phil Lynott to his dying day was that "Whiskey..." was TL's highest charting song, and he didn't write it.

5. The Boys Are Back In Town is their biggest hit.
Jailbreak,Bad Reputation and John the Fox and Live&Dangerous some of their best albums.

9. Depends on the country
IIRC "Whiskey" was their biggest hit in Ireland and the UK, while "Boys" was the bigger hit in North America.

My favorite is "Jailbreak", but that's just me.

10. I know, but
I think they were the first to do the whole electric guitar sound thing.

8. The Dubliners:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eOIU9ekSMk

Including the incomparable (and perhaps more traditional) lyrics:

"I counted out his money, and it made a pretty penny
I put it in me pocket, and I took it home to Jenny
She sighed and she swore that she never would deceive me
But the devil take the women, for they never can be easy

I went unto my chamber, all for to take a slumber
I dreamt of gold and jewels, and for sure it was no wonder
But Jenny drew me charge, then she filled them up with water
Then sent for Captain Farrel to be ready for the slaughter

'Twas early in the morning, just before I rose to travel
Up comes a band of thug-men and likewise Captain Farrel
I first produced me pistol, for she'd stolen away me rapier
But I couldn't shoot the water, so a prisoner I was taken"

11. I remember being totally amazed that my mom knew the words to this.
When I was a kid I had no idea it was a traditional Irish song.
