How sad is that? Or maybe it's actually a good thing. In the words of John Prine, throw away your tv, right? The last show I made an effort to watch was Boston Legal. I'll watch Project Runway if it's on, or Top Chef, and What Not to Wear on TLC, but those are just diversions, not really shows that are inspiring or interesting or make me think or laugh or are actually created by creative people making an effort to tell a story.

I'll watch Eureka when it comes back on SciFi ("syfy") but even that is borderline; the second season sorta sucked. And those who are fans of BSG, I understand the appeal, but it's too damn dark for me. I have enough nightmares as it is and I don't want to believe in a bleak future.

So, what do you like, and why? Is there any clever writing going on out there? 30 Rock? Ugly Betty? (Neither of which, I confess, have I ever watched). Help!

1. According to my cable guide channel 95 had something called His Slut Wife 54.
I would watch it but I hate starting a series in the middle.

2. hmm. Has possibilities, I guess
But what's the 54? The 54th episode? His 54th Slutty Wife? And do you think there is really any creative writing going on? :hi:

3. I'm guessing due to the popularity of the first 53....
by this point I assume his wife is quite slutty indeed.

:hi:

4. I sometimes wake up at odd hours of the early AM, and get to watch
The Male Enhancement Channel, Your Baby CAN READ! (Too bad Mom can't) Is Colon Detox Hype?, Phony Get-Rich-Plans Network, and the Nostradamus Marathon on the "History" Channel (Followed by Ghost Hunters and Un-Seen Monsters.) It's a treasure trove of entertainment.

I recall what seems like many years ago there were a lot of older movies being shown at these odd hours, and one could actually watch them.

I never thought TV could actually get worse, but it has.

9. You know, I realize this is irrational, but Tina Fey doing the
American Express commercial irritated me to the point of ignoring her show. Guess I'll have to get over my pettiness and give it a try.

Same with Patrick Stewart being the voice for one of the drug companies - pissed me off.

you do know that's Alan Shore (Spader) doing the voice overs for Acura.

:-)

12. mmm, hadn't heard them. I love his voice (I loooove James Spader)
For some reason that doesn't offend me as much as AmEx and big Pharma commercials do. I wish cars were more fuel efficient, but Acura - not a big deal to me. But then again, it irritated me when Sting sang for Jaguar. Go figure.

6. I thank the gods for the Daily Show and Colbert...
...and the occasional stand-up act on Comedy Central. There's loads of good science and non-winger history on NatGeo, Science and History International.

And I dig Dog Whisperer, when I need a happy ending.

7. Lost, Scrubs, Fringe, South Park, Dollhouse, Castle
and of course BSG are all shows I currently enjoy. All are semi-dark though - but then so is real life. My only requirement is that the shows be well written and these, while not not true for every episode, are generally well written shows IMO. I can't watch "reality shows". Makes my brain hurt.

10. Currently, it's only Lost and The Office, plus Daily Show at night.
I like My Name is Earl and even Kath and Kim, but Thursdays are all about The Office for me.

13. I can barely watch Olberman and Maddow because of all the commercials...
drives me freaking insane. ... all the other channels give credence that the prophesy proposed in the film 'Idiocracy' is coming to pass...

15. You sound like me.
I'll watch those diversion-type shows too. It's nothing I'm invested in really. I used to watch a LOT of tv. My parents watch SO many shows and DVR so many others. That's pretty much all they do every night.

18. Leider nicht
There's a whole world of good TV out there that we never get to see, especially since BBC America went for the knuckle-dragger demographic. (They seem to have a new rule: Only one show at any given time can appeal to people with more brains than a houseplant.)

I've said this before and I'll say it again: Get thee a region-free DVD player and order disks from Amazon UK, which also carries English-dubbed or subtitled versions of Continental European movies and TV shows that have never made it to the U.S. or have never been released on DVD here.

19. I recently cancelled my Direct TV service- went to an antenna.
It is the best thing I could have done. There are very few programs on broadcast television so I find myself with a LOT more time for other things. I mentioned this to a young guy I work with and he couldn't comprehend not having 200 stations of television.
