I am SO PROUD of my daughter. Most of you probably don't know that
she recently came out to close family, and none of us were surprised. That's an aside. Anyhow, she's an absolutely beautiful and brilliant girl and she has turned her latest attention to the effort to get a gay marriage proposal on the state ballot once again this year. She just got back from collecting signatures and is absolutely glowing! Tonight she was invited to two parties but she much preferred getting out there and doing what's right.

I am so lucky! Here's my lovely Goobie at Bar Harbor:

Young people are our hope, and there are many who are bright, concerned and eager to know more. Let it be the old folks' mission to inform them, and encourage them to act.

3. I really do.
She will make a difference. Even as a child she set up school fundraisers for causes that mattered to her, and at this time is involved in many progressive organizations. I'm just proud of her for getting out there and collecting signatures because she's had a bit of a struggle for the past couple of years and is now just going for it! Thanks, lightningandsnow!

It was a bit of a surprise but nothing more than that. She was raised to know we would welcome whoever she turned out to be.

41. Thank you all for the welcome...
That's very sweet.

As for my family, I'm 38 and they're still not accepting. My Mom is sorta, but in a very standoffish way. My fundie older sister and fundie Catholic father want nothing to do with me.

8. If she gets it on the ballot, I'll vote for it.
She really looks like you, it seems from pictures.
Except she doesn't make silly faces for the camera.

:hide:

PS

That picture is SO Maine. I think all Mainers have a picture like that of them; standing on bedrock on top of some old, rounded down mountain.

11. I have pretty much that exact same picture
Except it was taken in NJ. That photo looks like it could have easily been taken in NW Jersey.

12. From what I've seen, NW NJ is an awful lot like the Maine I know.
Even down to the people.

Except your accent is all wrong.

40. It's not that different from the Oxford Hills.
Edited on Sat Mar-21-09 05:41 PM by Gormy Cuss
The in-laws live in NW NJ. It's very pretty and has some of the higher elevations --the biggest hill in the state is High Point, 1800 ft elevation not counting the tower.

There are killer views from it. The AT also goes through that part of the state but it's mostly flat.

Heh. K is much more striking than I ever was, and she loves the camera. Always has!

If you stay in Maine, you will hear of her some day, I guarantee it.

16. Sometimes I believe so.
I have three kids who are not only brilliant but kind, thoughtful and loved by everybody who knows them. If nothing else, I taught them to embrace their fellow man!

Thanks, GOPisEvil. It's my one accomplishment, and my gift to the world!

Raising kids can be such a crapshoot. You can do everything right and your child's life can turn out poorly. I can only imagine how proud I'd be in your shoes.

Edited - forgot a word.

13. Good for her! Yay!
It is so incredibly cool that she's becoming an activist young. I hope she enjoys it enough to stick with it and invest in getting the skills and contacts to really go with this as she gets older.

And, thank you for being really cool about her and this. I wish every teen coming out had parents this accepting. :loveya:

17. She's about to turn eighteen and only gets more politically active
as she gets older. In her early teens when she was supposed to be polishing her nails, she was raising money for the Humane Society. She has always involved herself in meaningful causes; right now she's her high school liason with Veterans for Peace, and has forced the school to not only accept the organization, but to refuse certain of the recruitment materials brought into the school by the military. She isn't anti-military; she's pro-truth.

Love you, Thom, and hope you are having a good Friday evening. :loveya: :loveya:

30. Lovely young lady
Hi,
I agree with the other posts that is it great that she was in an environment where she would be accepted. It really is a shame so many kids are either not in that loving of an environment and are afraid or who do come out and then are shunned. I don't have any kids but I cannot imagine a parent doing that.

Peace
