Has anyone ever heard that when you give a knife set

as a present..you tape a penny to it? My parents have one from when they were married and I always wondered why there was a penny taped to it...it is for luck? I really don't know...

1. It's an old superstition - giving a knife as a gift can

"cut" the friendship (I don't know, either) and the penny is supposed to prevent that because you actually gave them money, and the knife just came along with it.

It's a pretty old folk kind of thing, and I think I got it pretty much right. Have no idea where it started, and wasn't aware it was still in practice.

The person to whom you give the knife set and penny is supposed to give the penny back to you; thereby 'buying' the knives, otherwise they will cut the ties between you.

I got my SO a Swiss army knife thing years ago and gave him a penny with it; he had never heard of this either and thought I was nuts.
