Thanks to all of you who offered suggestions, Consumer Reports recommendations & research tools. I hunted down Kenmore, Sharp, and Panasonic. In the end I found a Panasonic dealer at the store two doors up from me (I didn't realize they had added so much in the way of appliances) so I went for what I could get up here in 15 minutes. The guy even carried it home for me and set it in place! I couldn't have waltzed through this today without the DU's help last night.

:yourock: :fistbump:

1. Cool!
I have a Panasonic microwave that is 22 years old and is still going strong.
I hope you have the same good luck.

4. I just got a microwave too. My parents didn't have one when I was growing up
so I was used to not having one. Then I moved from place to place that only had tiny kitchens and I put it off. I bought one 4 months ago. I used it like crazy for the first two months. Now I ignore it. I could have predicted that.

In a way it may turn out to be a bit too smart(assed) for me. I kind of miss just having a number keypad. I have already discovered that I can not defrost a single roll or rwo slices of bread as I used to...around 23 seconds. This one has a Turbo Defrost that you set by weight ... the lowest is .1 pound and the time that comes up is 39 seconds, which is about twice as long as I need. You can't set defrost for less time than that so if I use it I will have to watch it and intervene..how genius is that?

8. I think you might try warm (lowest) setting for defrosting bread and rolls
I think the only difference is that 'defrost' produces intermittent MW so that the interior begins to heat up slightly, then that residual heat helps thaw the surrounding bread.

10. I'm sure it can be done
After all it was only through trial and error that I figured out the exact number of seconds for a bagel or sliced bread or rolls.
