1. He tries so hard to be a modern day William Faulkner
Edited on Sun Mar-22-09 07:37 AM by fishnfla
another writer who turned into a cheap hollywood hack (towards the end of his career). Reading 'the road' is like reading a screenplay, you can see it coming to a theater near you. I bet the movie is better than the book

he also has extended conversations in spanish, <here just turn the page while my characters communicate>

it is violence just for the sake of violence, blood meridian and child of god especially

I did like that book, Suttree, though

2. Faulkner only worked in Hollywood for a short time...
(mid career) and got out of there as soon as he could.
He was certainly not a Hollywood hack. Nor is McCarthy.

6. "Reading 'the road' is like reading a screenplay"
Yeah, cause nothing says Hollywood blockbuster like an ambiguous set up, unrelenting grimness, and barbecued babies.

8. Yes, I'm sure adding a post-apocalyptic exploding car chase, a love interest,...
...and a marauding band of fleshy-headed mutants will make it much more captivating.

3. I love me some Cormac McCarthy.
So I'm fine with the absence of quotation marks.
