What is the saddest break up song you have ever heard?
There are so many!! LOL

Maybe its just my mood today or maybe its winding down from the graveyard shift but I think Cry by Faith Hill is so sad!

9. Comin' Back to Me....Jefferson Airplane
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwPYhQVtIxU

The summer had inhaled
And held its breath too long.
The winter looked the same,
As if it had never gone,
And through an open window,
Where no curtain hung,
I saw you, I saw you,
Coming back to me.

One begins to read between
The pages of a look.
The sound of sleepy music,
And suddenly, you're hooked.
I saw you, I saw you,
Coming back to me.

You came to stay and live my way,
Scatter my love like leaves in the wind.
You always say that you won't go away,
But I know what it always has been,
It always has been.

A transparent dream
Beneath an occasional sigh...
Most of the time,
I just let it go by.
Now I wish it hadn't begun.
I saw you, I saw you,
Coming back to me.

Strolling the hill,
Overlooking the shore,
I realize I've been here before.
The shadow in the mist
Could have been anyone--
I saw you, I saw you,
Coming back to me.

Small things like reasons
Are put in a jar.
Whatever happened to wishes,
Wished on a star?
Was it just something
That I made up for fun?
I saw you, I saw you,
Coming back to me.

peace~

James Honeyman-Scott? Mostly about Honeyman-Scott, who died from a drug overdose. Both died within 6 months of each other.

Regardless, it's a REALLY sad song...

remember how it used to be
when the sun would fill up the sky
remember how we used to feel
those days would never end
those days would never end

remember how it used to be
when the stars would fill the sky
remember how we used to dream
those nights would never end
those nights would never end

it was the sweetness of your skin
it was the hope of all we might have been
that fills me with the hope to wish
impossible things

but now the sun shines cold
and all the sky is grey
the stars are dimmed by clouds and tears
and all i wish
is gone away
all i wish
is gone away

all i wish
is gone away

Also, there was a song by Mac Davis a while back that the Muscular Dystrophy Association used during their telethon. Made it sadder than it already was. Don't remember the name of it though.

Also:

Crying -- Roy Orbison
She's Gone -- Hall & Oates (This one is special for me. Hey, I was young...lol.)
Wasted Time -- The Eagles (I didn't think this one was so sad when I was a teenager. But the older I get, the sadder it gets.)
Telephone Line -- ELO (And by now you're realizing I was a teenager in the 1970s.)
Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me -- Elton John
Careless Whisper -- George Michael
Kiss And Say Goodbye -- The Manhattans

Also, the girl groups of the 50s and 60s had a ton of them.

25. Goodbye to Love
I'll say goodbye to love
No one ever cared if I should live or die
Time and time again the chance for love has passed me by
And all I know of love is how to live without it
I just can't seem to find it

So I've made my mind up I must live my life alone
And though it's not the easy way
I guess I've always known
I'd say goodbye to love

There are no tomorrows for this heart of mine
Surely time will lose these bitter memories
And I'll find that there is someone to believe in
And to live for something I could live for

All the years of useless search
Have finally reached an end
Loneliness and empty days will be my only friend
From this day love is forgotten
I'll go on as best I can

What lies in the future is a mystery to us all
No one can predict the wheel of fortune as it falls
There may come a time when I will see that I've been wrong
But for now this is my song

And it's goodbye to love
I'll say goodbye to love

26. Mike Nesmith's "Joanne." Though it's more of 'looking back on a breakup' song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y87gaUO1Zvc&feature=related

Her name was Joanne
And she lived near a meadow
By a pond
And she touched me for a moment
With a look that spoke to me
Of her sweet long

Then the woman that she was
Drove her on with desperation
And I saw, as she went
A most hopeless situation
For Joanne and the man
And the time that made them both run

She was only a girl
I know that well, but still I could not see
That the hold that she had
Was much stronger than the love
She felt for me

But staying with her
And my little bit of wisdom
Broke down her desires
Like a light through a prism
Into yellows and blues
And the tune that I could not have sung

Though the essence is gone
I have no tears to cry for her
And my only thoughts of her
Are kind

Her name was Joanne
And she lived near a meadow by a pond
And she touched me for a moment
With a look that spoke to me
Of her sweet long

Then the woman that she was
Drove her on with desperation
And I saw as she went
A most hopeless situation
For Joanne and the man
And the time that made them both run

For Joanne and the man
And the time that made them both run

29. George Jones ~ Come Sundown
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZz6OwCqD6U

I heard the front door closing softly,
as I wakened from my sleep;
With the last touch of her kips, Lord,
like a whisper on my cheek;

And I cursed the sun for risin',
'cause the worst, Lord, was yet to come;
'Cause this morning, she's just leavin',
but, come sundown, she'll be gone.

See the lipstick on the pillow
that I placed beneath her head;
And the soft sheets still feel warm, Lord,
where she lay upon my bed;

And it hurts to know it's over,
for the hurt, Lord, has just begun.
'Cause this morning, she's just leavin',
but, come sundown, she'll be gone.

Edited on Sun Mar-22-09 09:30 PM by Xipe Totec
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwnwPdhKcGU

When they speak to you of love, and hopes for the future
and they offer you the sun and a sky to go with it
if you remember me, don't say a word
because you will feel what true love was.

And if they want to know about your past
you will have to say a lie
tell them you come from a strange world
that you don't know how to cry
that you don't know of love
and that you have never loved.

Because wherever I go
I will speak of your love
as a golden dream
and forgetting all rancor
I will never admit your goodbye was my downfall

And if they want to know, about my past
I will have to say a different lie
I will tell them I come from a strange world
that I don't know pain
that I triumphed in love
and that I have never cried.

- Jose Alfredo Jimenez

... and I know some on here are going to say it's corny, but Gnarls Barkley's "Who's Gonna Save My Soul" is devastating if you've just gone through a break-up.

64. No joke!
I first saw it a day after I got dumped by a girl I had really fallen for. I remember seeing it and thinking "That is the truest thing I have ever heard in my life".

69. ''Diary'' by Bread
I found her diary underneath a tree.
and started reading about me
The words she's written took me by surpise
you'd never read them in her eyes.
They said that she had found the love she waited for.
Wouldn't you know it, she wouldn't show it.

When she confronted with the writing there,
simply pretended not to care.
I passed it off as just in keeping with
her total disconcerting air
and though she tried to hide
the love that she denied,
wouldn't you know it, she wouldn't show it.

And as I go through my life, I will give to her my wife
all the sweet things that I can find.

I found her diary underneath a tree.
and started reading about me.
The words began stick and tears to flow.
Her meaning now was clear to see.
The love she'd waited for was someone else not me
Wouldn't you know it, she wouldn't show it.

and as I go through my life, I will wish for her his wife
all the sweet things that she can find
all the sweet things they can find

Sara Bareilles "Gravity"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBiGrHc0Xy4

Something always brings me back to you.
It never takes too long.
No matter what I say or do, I still feel you here 'till the moment I'm gone.

You hold me without touch.
You keep me without chains.
I never wanted anything so much than to drown in your love and not feel your rain.

CHORUS
Set me free, leave me be. I don't want to fall another moment into your gravity.
Here I am and I stand so tall, just the way I'm supposed to be.
But you're on to me and all over me.

You loved me 'cause I'm fragile.
When I thought that I was strong.
But you touch me for a little while and all my fragile strength is gone.

CHORUS
Set me free, leave me be. I don't want to fall another moment into your gravity.
Here I am and I stand so tall, just the way I'm supposed to be.
But you're on to me and all over me.

I live here on my knees as I
Try to make you see that you're
Everything I think I need here on the ground.
But you're neither friend nor foe though I
Can't seem to let you go.
The one thing that I still know is that you're keeping me down
You're keeping me down, yeah, yeah, yeah
You're onto me, onto me and all over

Something always brings me back to you
It never takes too long

75. Looks Like Rain...>Grateful Dead
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPW5nZ7G3xs

Awoke today, felt your side of the bed;
The covers were still warm where you been layin'.
You were gone, oh gone, my heart was filled with dread;
You might not be sleeping here again.
But it's all right cause I love you, and that's not going to change.
Run me around and make me hurt again and again.
But I'll still sing you love songs, written in the letters of your name.
The rain is gonna come, oh it surely looks like rain

Did you ever waken to the sound of street cats making love?
You guess from the cries you were listening to a fight.
Well you know, oh know, hate's the last thing they're thinking of.
You know they're only tryin' to make it thru the night.

I only want to hold you, I don't want to tie you down
Or fit you in the lines I might've drawn.
It's just that I, oh I, have gotten used to havin' you around.
The landscape would be empty, if you were gone;
But it's all right cause I love you, and that's not going to change.
Run me around and make me hurt again and again.
But I'll still sing you love songs, written in the letter of your name.
The rain is gonna come, oh it surely looks like rain.

79. I've never been a fan of country music, but that genre does have the saddest breakup songs!
But when my ex-husband dumped me, the song that I generated to was Elton John's "Sacrifice" (still love it) and Queen's "Save Me" cuz anything sung by Freddie Mercury is gonna be that much more intense.

81. High Enough
yucky youtube

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qbSTATrnWI

I don't wanna hear about it anymore
It's a shame I've got to live without you anymore
There's a fire in my heart
A pounding in my brain
It's driving me crazy

We don't need to talk about it anymore
Yesterday's just a memory
Can we close the door
I just made one mistake
I didn't know what to say when you called me baby

Don't say goodnight
Say you're gonna stay forever
Oh oo Oh, all the way

Can you take me high enough
To fly me over (fly me over) yesterday
Can you take me high enough
It's never over
Yesterday's just a memory (yesterday's just a memory and)

I don't want to live without you anymore
Can't you see I'm in misery
And you know for sure
I would live and die for you
And I'd know just what to do when you call me baby

Don't say goodbye
Say you're gonna stay forever
Oh oo Oh, all the way

Can you take me high enough
Can you fly me over (fly me over) yesterday
Can you take me high enough
It's never over
Yesterday's just a memory, I'm running
I was running for the door
The next thing I remember
I was running back for more
Yeah...

Don't say goodbye
Say you're gonna stay forever
Oh oo Oh, all the way (all the way, all the way, yeah)

Can you take me high enough
Can you fly me over (fly me over) yesterday
Can you take me high enough
It's never over
Woh oo oh oo oh oo oh

Can you take me high enough
Won't you fly me over (won't you fly me over) yesterday
Can you take me high enough
It's never over
Woh oo oh oo oh oo oh

91. "The Bed"- Lou Reed
Edited on Tue Mar-24-09 01:05 AM by enigmatic
Really the entire "Berlin" record, but this will do:

http://recluseshow.blogspot.com/2009/03/bed-lou-reed.html

This is the place where she lay her head
When she went to bed at night
And this is the place our children were conceived
Candles lit the room brightly at night

And this is the place where she cut her wrists
That odd and fateful night
And I said, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, what a feeling
And I said, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, what a feeling

This is the place where we used to live
I paid for it with love and blood
And these are the boxes that she kept on the shelf
Filled with her poetry and stuff

And this is the room where she took the razor
And cut her wrists that strange and fateful night
And I said, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, what a feeling
And I said, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, what a feeling

I never would have started if I'd known
That it's end this way
But funny thing, I'm not at all sad
That it stopped this way

This is the place where she lay her head
When she went to bed at night
And this is the place our children were conceived
Candles lit the room brightly at night

And this is the place where she cut her wrists
That odd and fateful night
And I said, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, what a feeling
And I said, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, what a feeling..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6FSo0kkyXg">YouTube

English translation:
Innsbruck, I must leave you,
To go along my pathway
to strange and distant lands
My joy from me has faded
I don't know how to find it
I am in sorrow's hands

I am burdened with great sorrow
which I can remedy only
through the one dearest to me.
O my love, leave me not bereft
of compassion in your heart
that I must part from you.

My consolation above all other women,
I remain yours forever,
always faithful, in true honor.
And now, may God protect you,
safe in virtue,
till I return.
