Television is paid for by sponsors, in the form of commercials.

We buy the products advertised in the commercials.

In essence, WE are paying for television.

How's that for socialism?

So the next time I see a DTV advert that says "get the digital antennae now so you can watch free DTV..." when not reminding us 40 other times that wretched f-word ("free"), bugger off you pathetic wankers. It is NOT free.

Okay, all that's a bit simplified and generalized, but it's not an entire lie either. :P

I got tired of paying eighty dollars a month for my television service so I put up an antenna. Now I am enjoying "free" television.
