The Official "safe activities to do with right-wing relatives" Thread
My mom's side of the family is filled withright wingers. What can we do at get togethers? So far, all I can think of seems to be "watch M*A*S*H reruns" and, silently stuff our faces -- and hope no one calls Klinger a "faggot".

No, I don't consider debating politics safe! Not with two cousins in the marines, an uncle who clearcuts for a living, and fundie minister for a great uncle.

Let's come up with some safe, fun activities. Maybe we can make a dent in the US murder rate this year, hm?

1. I'll check back on this thread
I have written off my neo-con family until after the election. I can't stand them right now mostly because they keep on supporting homophobic politicians.

2. I just wouldn't go.
I have some right wingnuts in my family and I avoid them at all costs. If they are going to be at a family function, I politely decline and go about my business. :-)

5. Sports?
I (thankfully) lack freeper relatives, but I'm in a very conservative industry. Before I go to major industry events, I study up on current sporting events. (Last convention was the Steve Bartman game, so that one was easy. The next one's March Madness.)

It's sad how many times I've had to throw "So, how bout them Final Four" into a conversation, to steer it away from politics.

4. Fun things to do with right-winged nuts...
oops, I meant relatives: have fun, smile a lot, be happy, be tolerant, that will drive them crazy.

8. Miniature golf!!!
I have (few at this point) Fundie relatives who LOVE miniature golf. Sure, I'm terrible at it, but there are no tension overloads - in fact we seem to have so much more in common - when we play on this (ludicrous, tiny, small, miniscule, lame) course.
When I play w/ age peers on the REAL course things have become more sticky.
Stick with the small game.......it fits (and you can still be friends)!

9. Aren't Hawkeye and B.J. Liberal?
I love M*A*S*H!! But, if you really watch it, the stars of the show are very liberal. You could watch that show with your right wing family and "plant" subliminal liberal seeds of thought in their minds that just might grow into some shred of enlightenment.

Naahh, probably not.

I talk about sports with my fascist family.

Edit -- P.S. you have a great screen name!

silencer optional. target practice on running wingnuts will release all that tension and make the world a better place.
