1. Last Tango In Paris - the movie that gave a whole new meaning to 'butter you up'

3. I got in so much trouble
when that movie first opened.

We were living in Chicago, and it opened with great fanfare at the old Chicago theater down in the Loop. An extravagant old place, HUGH.

You might not be old enough to remember the old Blue Bonnet margarine commercials.

After that infamous sodomizing-with-butter scene, I blurted out - in this fine old theater with the stupendous acoustics - "Everything's better with Blue Bonnet on it."

The place exploded. I just tried to hide in my seat....................

4. David Steinberg had a similar bit at the time.
I think it had to do with an Imperial Margerine commercial where a crown would suddenly appear on the users head. Great comedic minds think alike.

5. Those old theaters
have the most remarkable acoustics. I heard my voice ring out like I was on some super sound system. Unbelievable.

Brando with a crown? Yeah, that would work.

heh heh heh

11. The Quiet Knight is still there?
Edited on Wed Mar-25-09 11:38 PM by Tangerine LaBamba
I'm awfully glad to hear that.

We used to see Steve Goodman and John Prine and Bonnie Koloc at the Earl of Old Town. We could walk to Second City, and when Treasure Island opened its store across the street from Second City, I was the first customer to check out.

I loved that city. Still do. We lived at Clark and Armitage, in the building with the Four Torches restaurant on the ground floor. I used to run into Mayor Daley - the old man - in the elevator. He was a big flirt, which I enjoyed, especially since it was like having a very short frog compliment you............

12. quiet knight has been gone for a long time, sadly. saw lots of great music there,
miss that part of town...I live out in the burbs, and am too lazy/irritable to deal with coming downtown

do I remember you saying you live around DC?

if so, I have a tangential steve goodman story: did some work for a couple who worked at Cellar Door/Blues Alley, and became friends with him. she showed me the Cubs hat he gave to her. I wanted it badly, but she wouldn't part with it.

last summer was made very sad for me when his ''dying request'' didn't materialize

13. The Cellar Door is long gone, too;
Blues Alley is still going strong, although it's really cleaned up now and not as much fun.

Yes, I'm in Alexandria, just across the river from DC - not far out enough to be the serious kind of suburb, fortunately.

The loss of Steve Goodman was one of the saddest things that ever happened in the American music scene. He was remarkable, and imagine how he'd have continued if he'd been given the chance.

If they'd won last summer, it would have been incredibly bittersweet, but I still wish they had.

You're nice .................

18. yeah...cellar door closed while I still lived there....76-90.
and when you talked about mayor daley, I immediately thought of
''Mr. Ray'' Giovannoni, who owned Il Porto and the Fish Market at the other end of the block. Did a lot of work for him at those places, some other properties, and his snazzy house out near Landmark. he looked, walked like the Penguin, and was as much of a prick....very much considered himself a "ladies'" man, as well. if you're right across the river, do you live near/in Old Town?

I lived in four different houses in Arlington; and one in Falls Church. one of my favorie things was to ride bikes down thru Ft. Meyer, the cemetery, past National, and down to Old Town

ever go to the Lebanese Taverna? GWB and, what, Lexington? can't hardly remember anymore. I lived nearby for a few years. things have really changed since they put in the Metro

19. I knew Mr Ray ........
You're right - he looked exactly like The Penguin. I never thought of it before, but, man, he made my flesh crawl every time he stopped by and put his hand on my arm or my shoulder.

We used to hit the Fish Market for lunch, or just hanging out after work, drinking. My office was at 118 S. Royal - you know where that is, right?

Home now is out near Landmark, and you wouldn't recognize the area if you left in 1990. I've been here since 1974, and I don't recognize it. The change has not been for the better. I liked the old days so much better. I even liked the old courthouse so much more than that big sucker they built. A big success, that one - as soon as they opened it, they found out that the magic alarm system in the courtrooms that was supposed to be activated by pens in the marshals' pockets didn't work right unless the pen was three inches or so from the sensor - which was in the ceiling.

Also, they'd installed a deluge system in the holding cells in the basement. Very state-of-the-art back then. If a commotion broke out, activating the system would cause showers to rain down on the cells, effectively soaking everyone with very cold water.

Unfortunately, they'd forgotten to install drains.

The old courthouse had none of those problems.

Yeah, the Lebanese Taverna was always great. I haven't been there in years, but you wouldn't believe that part of Arlington now, either. Incredibly overbuilt. All the great funky Vietnamese places are gone, alas. Again, the Metro.

That's still a great bike ride, but you would encounter now, as you went down Route 1 a whole world of development. Potomac Yard in the old railyard. Target, Shoppers Food Warehouse, multiplex cinema, a zillion stores and restaurants. And pricey apartments across the way. Unbelievable.

Do you remember the Shirlington Deli, which was on Route 1 after leaving Shirlington - which also got overdeveloped? That place had the BEST delicatessen anywhere.

I love it here. And the cherry blossoms are right on time ........................

21. Oh, lord, YES!
My best friend had a studio in the building on the corner of Columbia Pike and Walter Reed Drive. The electronics store was on the ground floor. I think it used to be Wall Street Clothiers, or something like that, up on the second floor where all these great artists now having studios. Columbia Pike Artists' Studios: http://www.columbiapikeartiststudios.org/index.html

Attila's is great. I'm a sucker for lamb, and I can have it a million different ways there. Plus, the service is always so nice. It's a great place: http://www.atillasrestaurant.com/restaurant/restaurant.htm

That area has really blossomed in the past ten years, really gotten interesting. It was once so run-down, and now it's absolutely cool, which is good.

It pissed me off. Not because of the sex but because the Brando character was such a selfish asshole.

14. I thought the film wildly overrated.
It was a great self-indulgent performance by Brando, and not much else.
