My mom had another heart attack today.

It's bad. She's had severe emphysema for years, and three previous heart attacks. They're going to have to do open-heart surgery for her to even have a chance, and because her lungs are in such bad condition, they aren't sure that she'll make it through the surgery.

She wants to see her grandkids again before they put her under--probably tomorrow. I'm not sure how we're going to figure that one out, as there are some obstacles involved, but we're going to try.

I have pretty much no minutes left on my phone, so if you have my number, please don't think I'm being rude if you try to call and nobody answers. I have to save what I have for talking to my sister and the hospital.

Please keep our family in your thoughts. I feel so damned helpless right now, and horribly, horribly afraid.

Edit: I now have minutes on my phone--thank you, you-know-who. Rhythm is talking to Mom right now--she's in cardiac ICU, but is awake and aware and comfortable. They have her on several kinds of blood thinners and other medicines plus oxygen, and she has to go first thing in the morning for a catheter procedure to find out where the blockages are and how the surgery will need to proceed.

The surgery that they'll be doing is a bypass procedure called a CABG ("cabbage".) It is supposedly the most common type of bypass surgery in the country. Hers will be complicated because of her severe emphysema. We're staying hopeful, though. God knows she's survived things almost as bad as this before. My mother has some seriously powered-up healing capabilities.

I haven't been able to talk to her yet, but I'm going to here in a little while, so I can find out if it's bypass surgery that they'll be doing. I'm pretty sure that must be the case--what other heart surgery do heart attack patients usually need, right?

a friend who is elderly, had emphysema, still smokes and had a bad heart was going through something similar a year ago and he came through the surgery and is doing okay these days.

Try and stay positive and have faith in the surgeons. Sitting in the waiting room
waiting for the outcome can be brutal. I've done it. Husband came out of it
