1. I wouldn't say "yuck" but it's just not my scene.
I don't think they're terrible, but I don't own any of their music.

They went into a slump after The Black Album, but the new CD is good. I keep a few metal CDs around for if I'm in a venting mood.

That would drive me nuts all the time. That's why I still think music is the most subjective art form.

6. Metallica the Metal band was great.
Metallica the sell-out commercial rock band is mediocre to terrible.

Their first four releases are among the best the genre has to offer.

7. Is their last release a sellout?
I don't think so.

It might not please a lot of fans, but hell, they rip away the pages of their own history with this last one, wouldn't you say?

The question becomes, for me, are the Iron Maiden quality.

I say yes.

10. Death Magnetic has some good stuff on it.
Freeing Kirk up to solo again was certainly a plus. He's definitely the star of the release, even in the filler songs he shines. Overall it was a mediocre record but it does have a few good tracks. "My Apocalypse" in particular harkens back to the old days and is probably the best song they've done since "Dyer's Eve". They sold out a long time ago, it's not something you do on an album to album basis.

13. I find it to be mediocre.
As I've said. It's very long winded. Is it better than the garbage they've foisted on us for nearly 20 years? Yeah. Is it First 4 level? Not even close.

But it's a great comeback after St. Anger, you gotta admit.

Cyanide rocks, imho.

They didn't take the easy way out with this last work.

Some good songs on their own.

17. Nearly anything they did would be an improvement over St. Anger.
Death Magnetic is head and shoulders and torso and legs better than that piece of shit. I like "That Was Just Your Life", "The End Of The Line", "All Nightmare Long" and "My Apocalypse". "The Day that Never Comes" has grown on me as well. I still find some of the lyrics cringe worthy but overall it's a pretty good song.

11. Rip away the pages of their own history is right...
... I seriously think they tried to rip off as many riffs and sections of their previous songs as they could to make that album.

30. My friend said that if he had never heard Metallica Death Magnetic would seem awesome.
If some new band came along and released that people would be all over it. But Metallica has to fight they're own history of awesomeness, and people still expect them to do another Master of Puppets. I'd be happy to hear something closer to ...And Justice For All, and the two songs I did hear had that same feel.

From what I've heard of the new Mastodon CD they're going to present me with the same problem of having to accept a new sound that seems cool, just not as cool as what they did before (though it's way to early to comment really. I haven't even heard the whole CD yet).

9. I try to be fair with Metallica, but it's incredibly hard to.
Especially, after their Metalli-greed episode.

Their first four and even parts of their fifth albums were among the best metal had to offer. Almost everything afterwards (especially St. Anger) has been fucking vomit in comparison.

That being said, I have always said that if the albums Load, Re-Load, Death Magnetic, etc. had been made by any other band they would be far more respected.

19. Liked the pre-unforgiven stuff.
Nothing beats early Metallica. Kill em all,Ride the Lightning and so on.
The minute James thought he could sing was when Metallica went down. I think they should sue Bob Rock.
Their newest album is the best thing they've done in years.

20. Death Magnetic is an improvement ...

I don't know how much that says really, though. They're going to have to go some and for an extended period of time for them to achieve anything close to what they did in the distant past. They set their own bar and then did sell out and haven't even been able to see the bar since. You don't just stop being a sell out, and, right or wrong, that influences my opinion of them.

I like some of this music (some of it is, still, terrible however), but what I like about it generally strikes me as ripping off their own, old stuff, not coming up with anything new to keep me interested.

Iron Maiden they are not.

And I will never get over the image of Lars jamming to an Avril Lavigne cover of Fuel. That just sickened me.

21. Here's the thing.
Metallica was a great band in the 80s. I don't know what the hell they were trying in the 90s, but it didn't work for me. This last album is okay. The song are real hard, like they used to be. But the thrill is gone.

And I'll tell ya what, they totally phoned it in on the live tour. Well, not totally. Just Kirk Hammet. Hetfield was okay. His slow guitar playing was atrocious, as always (I couldn't wait for the Master Of Puppets bridge to be over...lol.) Lars and Bass Player were tight as hell. Yep, Hammet sucked..

Only metal I still listen to from those days is entombed and obituary. That, and Pantera and Sepultura.

Don't dislike them, but most of their songs are just so-so to me.

The one exception is "For Whom the Bell Tolls," especially because of that opening riff.

27. I never would have guessed that Exodus would be the best Bay Area band going.
But their last couple have been thrash monsters. Riff after riff after riff.

I've had Death Magnetic sitting right beside the PC for 3 weeks. I still haven't even played it. The two songs I've heard weren't too bad, I just have 8,000 other bands that I need to listen to. In the last month alone my friend has burned off about 2 dozen copies of new stuff to check out. It's like homework, only fun!

Metallica in the day was the end all, be all of thrash music, and were THE band to be in to. I remember telling people when Master of Puppets was out that they would be huge, and everyone just laughed at me. And it's funny how many people claim they liked it all along because I only knew two other people who liked them. Everyone else was still listening to Ratt.

They take themselves WAAAAAY too seriously to me. I wish they'd branch out and try some side projects. Get Lars playing in a band like Nile or something.

Now, I don't much care for their music. Although admittedly, Death Magnetic was a pretty good return to form.

I loved everything up until ...And Justice For All. I liked the "Black Album" but I didn't love it: some pretty good songs on that one that didn't get airplay.

I've seen them in concert a couple times, many moons ago, and they were/are quite good live.

37. RIDE THE LIGHTNING will always be THE definitive Metallica release
Liked everything up until their fifth album, but sensed that they were trying to slow down for some time. It was their former producer, Fleming Rasmussen, who insisted they stay fast and hard, so finally they jettisonned him and brought in Bob Rock.

38. The Napster thing did it for me.
Metallica died with Cliff (rip).

The walking corpse that wanders the landscape with symphony orchestras and Guitar Hero stink is beyond my care. I can't even be bothered to torrent their last albums. They could be masterpieces. I just don't care.

39. Used to listen to them
Used to really like them.

I got to a point with them when they just turned into background music though. They seemed to lack the enthusiasm for their music that other bands have, their lyrics weren't especially interesting or clever and the formulaic construction of their songs began as different, moved on to repetitive and found it's home at laughable.

For me, they became the perfect parody of a metal band.
